A friend and I are going to be doing our first wedding cake for another friend and she would like to have figures of her and her husband to be on the cake. We are planning to make these figures out of fondant or gumpaste. We have already told the bride that the figures will be caricatures. Does any one have any tips for modeling people out of fondant or gumpaste before we get started?

look in the polymer clay section of craft store (or on the internet) for:

push molds

you are looking for the doll or character type (one brand is "What a Character")

these will make the hardest parts: face, hands, feet.

they come in many sizes and even ages.

this will get you a start on the likeness which you can personalize from there.

(those polyclay folks have lots of tools, molds, techniques that work very well w/ fondant/gumpaste, etc.)

Check this out, maybe you could get this book and follow the instructions with fondant or gumpaste instead of the polymer clay???? I've been meaning to get it and give it a try but don't really have a reason to do it...but it seems like you guys do!!! Good Luck, can't wait to see what you come up with.

I don't have any tips for you. You may want to check out some books at Michael's or any craft stores on the subject of modeling with Polymer Clay. I understand it's pretty much the same as working with fondant or gumpaste. HTH.

thanks guys! That should give us a place to start with the faces. Does anyone have any advice on getting them to stand, making the bodies/clothes, etc?

that's all in that Friends and Family book...they actually show you how to take the photos of friends, etc. and turn them into characatures...they show the bodies and clothes also

I will have to go and see if they have that book at our local craft store. We were hoping to get started on part of this tonight.

I recently got a cake book at at Borders called "Celebrate with a Cake" by Lindy Smith. They actually have a wedding cake in the book and they make the bride and groom. It show how to make them and the clothing and how to put them together. Hope this helps.

I was just going to suggest this book! I borrowed it from the library and have it at home, it has very detailed instructions!

This is a link to show what others she has done. The one in the book is more basic.
