I piped some lilies yesterday morning and they are still damp at the base. Also, I used heavy duty foil (a big mistake). Do any of you lily nail users have any tips. This is the first time I have used it and of course, I want to make them for a cake for Sunday. Do I need to dust the foil before piping them or will they just come off the foil easily? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi,
I've had the same problem and asked for help too. The nice people here told me to try using Reynold's Wrap Release tin foil. That helped a little but I think my main problem is that I made the flowers so thick at the base that they just wouldn't dry. I had mine sitting out for 4 days and they still were wet when I peeled them off the foil. ( and they still cracked too icon_mad.gif )

Maybe you can try doing more but making them thinner at the base so they'll dry. Hope that helps.

I use Cheap thin foil and my wilton teacher had us lightly grease the foil with solid shortning ( It dosent bother the royal icing) Then poke holes in the foil at the botton before you pipe. This works great but it does take about two to three days to dry.

I've placed my lilies in front of a fan, to dry them faster.....worked like a charm!

I use the non-stick foil with no problems. How thick are you making your royal icing? If you're using too thick of royal, that might be causing the cracking and slow drying. (too thin and your lily won't hold its shape). I also make mine about a week in advance so they're sure to dry thoughout. My base is usually pretty thick with icing too, but still no problems with the drying process. Just a matter of trial and error and practice most likely.
I hope this helps and don't forget to upload your cake!!!

4days!! I think I'll end up doing roses or something. We'll see, maybe if I blast them with a hairdryer they might dry in time. Thanks for all the help. I should have realized that I needed to start earler. Next time!
