Hello - I want to make a cake with several different kinds of flowers and royal icing is recommended for the flowers. Can royal icing flowers be placed on a cake iced in buttercream, or do I need to make the flowers in buttercream also?

You can put royal icing on a buttercream iced cake, but make sure the cake gets eaten soon. Buttercream breaks down the royal icing and the flowers will come apart. I've kept a cake with royal icing flowers on it for the max 2 days before I started to see a breakdown of the royal icing. This time may vary depending on the environment.

Yes you can place royal icing flowers on buttercream icing.

I think the misconception about not being able to place royal icing decorations on buttercream icing lies with misunderstanding royal icing. Royal icing was originally made with egg whites. These egg whites were whipped up a bit and not only help to gave royal icing its strength and durability but volume. So for much the same reason that it's required that everything be grease free when making meringues, the same is required when making royal icing.

Let your royal icing flowers dry really well before you place them on the cake. They will tend to absorb any moisture and start to soften up. (Just like placing a cube of sugar on a drop of water). If you have a buttercream icing that crust over really well there's less of a chance of the flowers softening up in any hurry.

So remember you can place royal icing flowers on a cake iced in buttercream, the only reason why you need to avoid grease with royal icing is due to the fact that grease or egg yolk will prevent egg whites (meringue powder is mainy egg whites) from whipping up.
