Just a quick question for all you Satin Ice users. When rolling out the fondant, do you dust your work surface with powdered sugar or use shortening? Just curious what the majority does.
Thanks
Patrice
I use shortening. Cornstarch and powdered sugar only serve to dry it out faster, and make it tougher when you try to eat it.

I use a very lightly dusted counter of cornstarch to help it from sticking, and shortening to help soften it.
I use shortening on my hands and rolling pin. I have a silpat to roll it out on - so I don't need to put anything on it!

I need to get me one of those silpat mats. Anyone know where you can get them for a good price?
Believe it or not Bed Bath and Beyond carry them. With the 20% off coupon they send in the mail, it's a good deal. I have also seen them at Walmart. And can I just say Duh!!! Never thought of rolling it out on my Silpat...of course the fondant that I needed on my most recent wedding cake would have been too big for my silpat. And while i'm mentioning my most recent wedding cake..can I just brag a bit. I just delivered it tonight for the wedding tomorrow. I can't wait to download the pictures. This was one of my best cakes to date. I made it with Roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and lots of ivy and leaves. The colors were sage green and eggplant. And the grooms cake was a replication of a race car the groom used to own. I will post them when I get them on my comuter. I know I got off topic, but I just had to share. I am so excited!!
I just bought Satin Ice for the first time after a failed attempt at MMF (I must have put in too much Crisco). I played with it for a while and got it to soften up. I broke off a small piece to taste and wasn't happy with the taste and neither was my son who I was making the cake for. I added a little vanilla and worked in some more powdered sugar and it came out better tasting. I then sprinkled my work surface with more powdered sugar and greased up the fondant and the rolling pin. It was very easy to roll out and I'm very pleased with the results.
