Does anyone know the technique to make MMF pearls? Do I need a "form" or something? I am making a wedding cake next month and wanted to try out this technique. Thanks for any help!

They can be made by hand..just roll out some fondant and use the fat end (depending on the size pearls you want) of a decorating tip. Use that repeatedly to cut out circles, roll the circles in balls and toss in a bag with petal/luster dust. By using the fat end of a decorating tip, you get consistent size pieces. This is a very tedious process.

the alternative is a pearl bead maker. It is a 6 or 8" long piece of rubber that opens up( comes in various pearl sizes), inside is the hollowed out shape of a string of pearls. You brush the inside with petal/luster dust, press in the fondant and squeeze it closed..open it up and you have a string of pearls, covered in petal/luster dusts!!

Hi! Earline Moores web site has a tutorial on making fondant pearls. I have been using this to make pearls for my sons wedding cake. www.earlinescake.com It is very tedious but they turn out beautiful. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks for info....can you purchase the pearl forms at a store or do you need to order via internet? Also, what is luster dust, and where do you purchase?

In my area I haven't been able to find the pearl forms, so my only option would be the internest. As far as luster dust, I bought pearl dust which is similar, and I got the color super pearl, I was able to find it at my cake decorating craft store. But there was only one store in my area that had it. I thought that I was going to have to order it on the internet.

My local cake supply store sells the pearl bead maker and the luster dust. So I don't have to go far to get it. My store is kind of expensive since they are privately owned company and one of the largest cake supply stores in my area.

When I want to buy it for a cheaper price I sometimes check ebay. I know there is luster dust for sell on ebay but not sure about the pearl bead maker.

Try www.sugarcraft.com. This online store has EVERYTHING to do with cake decorating.

I checked sugarcraft and they have the pearl bead makers. They have them in different sizes. Once you go to the website, clink on GP tools on the left side of the page. Then click on bead/pearl presses. Scroll down the page and you will see a list of pearl/bead makers for sale.

Well, I found the luster dust and bought it. My cake supply store had one size pearl/bead mold, but it was $23...so I am checking on prices on the sites you suggested. Hopefully, I'll be making pearls by the end of next week, one way or another. icon_lol.gif

cindycakes2
Buying them online my come out to be the same price as your cake supply store. The smallest bead maker on sugarcraft.com was about $17 so once you add shipping to that you may end up paying $23 for it. However, if you purchase other items online besides the bead maker I'm sure you'll come out with a good price.

Does the process work the same using MMF instead of regular fondant?

I haven't tried it yet with marshmallow fondant, but I'm sure that it would work just fime. Marshmallow fondant works up the same as regular fondant but taste much better. I'm just using up a small batch of Reg. fondant that I had, as most people don't eat the pearls anyway, so I figured that I had may as well use it up.
