I just had to thank everyone at cakecentral.com for all the advice and support! I only make cakes once or twice a year for family birthdays, and this year my son wanted an "Optimus Prime" cake.
This was WAY out of my league but luckily I stumbled across this site and forums. I didn't even know what fondant WAS 2 months ago, but knew it's what I needed to do for a really cool Transformer cake.
After following all the advice and doing a practice cake with MMF, the pic below is what my son had for his party (it's in the gallery too). I got many compliments, but my favorite is from my 5 year old son, "WHOA! Awesome Mom!"
Thanks again!
Not having any kids or being around any...I have NO idea who/what Optimus Prime is, but that is one fantastic-looking cake! Great job!
Thanks for the comments everyone, me blushes.
I gave some of the details how I made it in the gallery click here A few things I didn't mention:
I found a photo I liked of OP and enlarged it on the computer. I traced over it and printed it out to fit a 13x9 area. Then I cut it out and laid it on the cake, cutting away the excess. The arms I cut off the body, to make it easier to get the space between them and the torso. I formed the head from the scraps and froze the cake overnight. Then I assembled it, covered it with pour& frost canned icing for a crumb coat (I know, I know, but bc just didn't work for me with all those cut sides! ). After waiting 15 minutes I started rolling out the fondant, cutting the shapes I needed and applying them piece by piece. The hardest part was laying them down in the right order. (torso, head, legs, arms, accents) I also painted the "chrome" with silver lustre dust mixed with lemon extract. It took me 3 hours to lay on all the fondant, but I was SO happy with the results. MMF rocks!
Yes, I did a wedding cake in MMF last weekend. I love MMF - my only complaint was that it was hard to roll out for the larger cakes - like the 14 inch. We had to knead in a TON of shortening and glycerin to get it that elastic. But other than that, it's wonderful. And it tastes great. I'll never use that nasty Wilton stuff again! Why in the world can't they just put some flavoring or something in it? Absolutely everyone hates it! There's so many other fondants out there, like Satin Ice (which I love, but it's so expensive)- why can't Wilton just try a little bit to make their brand more appealing?! Well, anyway, that's why I love MMF! And you did a great job with it! I never would have thought of that trick of pouring melted canned frosting - that will indeed save me a lot of time if I ever do a similar cake. Thanks for sharing the info!
you did a great job, Imagine what you could do if you did cakes more than a couple times a year.....
