for a 'rocket' ship shaped 3D, just use stacked construction and cake rounds to achieve the height you need and taper off the top to creat a coned shape then frost. the fins and other accesories can be made from gumpaste, chocolate, fondant....whatever you prefer. maybe pipe some BC flames/smoke on the board around the cake to look like it is taking off?
hope that helps!

There is a picture of my 3D rocket ship on my photos page. I did 10 layers, starting with 8in rounds up to 6in rounds and carved with an electric knife.
The "wings" are white chocolate and the planets and stars are made from sticky foamies on wire sticks.
This was my first 3d cake (I put a picture of the birthday boy in the window)

if you are looking for a small cake, i make one on the tall teir stand. I cover the bottom plate with green grass, the pillar with yellow for the beam of light coming out of the bottom of the ship. the bottom of the top plate is iced gray. The cake is then done on a board the same size as the top plate and the cake is iced gray and then the details added.

I'll have to find a picture and see if i can post it here for you. But it is a very easy cake to make.
