I am a home daycare provider and I have a woman who has two kids that I watch, one of her children is autistic and the other has a few developmental delays. She is a SAHM but uses me to get a break and for the myriad of therepies etc that she takes her son to. Anyway she has been especially stressed lately and she mentioned that she loves chocolate, so I was thinking I'd love to make her a quick chocolate cake today. But it has to be from a box, all I have is Devil's Food Cake, and I have never tasted devils food cake, or if I have I don't remember, is it good and chocolatey? I plan on making a simple butter cream frosting using Kahlua instead of vanilla(I just did this last week for a cake and it was YUMMY) So the question is: is Devil's Food Cake rich and chocolatey?

Devi's food is really good!!!! check out the recipes onsite here and they may have a suggestion to enhance the chocolate cake. EX:more cocoa, some chocolate, or maybe a ganache filling (ooohhhh.. yea!) that would be very good. Chocolate ganache and kuhula frosting... what time's dessert????

Ganache:heavy cream brought to a boil, put in a bag of chocolate chips and stir until melted. Let sit in fridge to harden and then use as a cake filler. yummy!!

And HOW THOUGHTFUL of you to do something nice like this out of the blue for someone!!!!! Very tender and caring of you!!!

I personally think Devil's food is the best. I think I love it so much because when I first started baking that's all I made. For sentimental story for you all, I started baking with my Dad. Yes, I said my Dad. The one who mowed the lawn and fixed the cars actually sat down with me, minus his greasy hands, and helped me learn how to bake with my first Easy Bake Oven. I even got the latest version of Easy bake oven when I went to college to use as my toaster and such since we weren't allowed the open heating elements. It was a riot in the dorms. I'm going to post a new thread on your Easy Bake Oven memories. Check it out. I wish I could hear everyones story of the world's coolest toy for girls!

Sounds yummy..and kudos to you for doing day care. I do day care also and it is a demanding job nevermind taking care of an autistic child. I know it's not cake advise but wanted to say hello one caregiver to another and bless your heart.

I have watched her kids for several years and she is just a really great gal. She has done so much research into autism and has radically altered her kids' diets and made such a difference etc, she makes everything from scratch and has to do so much leg-work to ensure that her kids eat stuff that won't mess them up and she has no family in AZ AND her hubby has been in Singapore on business for a couple weeks, so I think she needs some freaking CHOCOLATE icon_biggrin.gif Unfortunatly this is a last minute deal and I don't have a lot of ingrediants so I'm kinda winging it! I have heavy cream, but am out of my Ghiridelli choc. chips... But I am on a mission!

Devil's food is really chocolately and moist and did I mention DELICIOUS! My husband and brother in law die for it. When they want a cake it's that kind. I usually get Pillsbury or Duncan Hines and for a simple cake, just leave like it is, no need to add extra stuff. Those 2 are moist enough! Yummy!

You are so nice to do that for a SAHM!-Josie icon_smile.gif

I have tried several scratch cakes now and got better results with the DH devils food that I used on a cake last week. I got more compliments on it than any other cake I have made which shocked me but it was quite moist and very chocolately! icon_smile.gif I am going to use this recipe from now on for my chocolate cake requests! BTW Kudos to you for seeing that she needs a lift! It is good that the world has people in it like you! icon_smile.gif

YEP! Duncan Hines Devil's Food is ALWAYS in my cupboard (until i bake it all!) thumbs_up.gif LOVE IT!!!

I can relate with your friend and her children. My son has severe food allergies to peanuts and dairy and some behavioral issues that I've had to plan around since he was 1 yr old. it's NOT easy but the things you learn are beneficial for the rest of your life!!! And I agree....SHE DOES NEED SOME CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!

Well here is the finished product. I used a DH Devil's Food cake mix I mysteriously had in my cupboard and a butter cream frosting made with Kahlua. I cut the cake in half and filled it with the butter cream as well, then I tried a half-a**ed attempt at Cornelli lace(is that what its called?) Anyway I think its cute. I keep trying to attach it here, but I don't think its working... I'll post it in my photos right away

GOD made you a wonderful person. You know he is smiling on you.
I love devils food. The ganache would be a great compliment to it.
God bless you.
