My husband's grandmother is turning 87 years old this weekend. My husband wants me to bake her a cake. Here is my dilemma.... I want to bake the cake here, since she lives in New Mexico and I don't want to deal with the altitude issues. We are flying out on Friday 4/7. The flight is about 3 hrs long then we have a 2 hr drive to get to her house. I was thinking of baking and icing the cake and using a cake box to transport it (carrying it on my lap of course). The cake will have a pack of cigarettes and a lighter made out of fondant (since she can't live without her smokes); these however I will place once we arrive. My question to you all is, does this sound like it can be done, or should I consider another way of transporting this cake. The only option I will not consider is baking the cake there. Hahahahaha......By the way the cake will be a round cake 10". Nothing fancy...except the toppers. I appreciate any suggestions.
thanks...nestle

You will be fine havenleigh! I recently transported two tiers from NY to FL - 1 1 /2 drive to airport; 3 hr flight - with no problems. It's the clothesline baby shower cake in my photos. I found this great carrier in Target for $10 - I can't think of the name of it and I"m at work - it's two pieces that snap together with a carrying handle ... http://www.improvementscatalog.com/Parent.asp?product=253369x&dept%5Fid=1 it looks like this but clear/green and w/o the ornament dividers. I strapped a luggage strap around it and through the handle for support. What was nice about it was the airport screeners could see through it. Make sure to use some of that nonskid shelf liner under your cake. The topper was gumpaste, wrapped in bubble wrap, which i put on when i got there.

Just a suggestion but what about ordering an iced cake from a local bakery that you can decorate once you get there? My 2 cents!

I think you should be fine.............I would get a cake carrier thingy.......I got one at TArget for five bucks!!!!!! It holds up to a 12" round without smudging the sides and it would protect it if it gets jossled around a bit ...more so than just a box.....check it out....pretty much like this one....only without all the inserts!!! But I've literally had it flip on its side and because the cake board was 12" and the cake was10" the cake adhered to the board and the board didn't have room to slide inside and I didn't get even one little smudge in the icing, it was amazing
