My son wants a space theme for his bday party this weekend. I had thought about making a planet or the moon using a pyrex bowl at one end of a cake board, then at the other have a rocketship either taking off or heading to that planet or moon. Has anyone done a similar style of cake? Does anyone have a better idea for me? I want something really cool to add to my portfolio and something the kids will get a kick out of. icon_smile.gif

I did a similar cake a few months back. (trying to attach it here, hope it works) I actually bought the shuttle from sugarcraft (www.sugarcraft.com) All icing is buttercream with royal icing stars. The steam is stiff buttercream and I lined my bag using a toothpick with orange color and used white icing for the border.

Astro, What a cool cake! My son would love something like that. Hadn't thought of using a toy or anything already made. Thanks for sharing! icon_wink.gif

wendysue you could carve a rocket ship. I'd say stack a few 8 or 10 in rounds and carve to look like a rocket ship getting ready to launch. Make some fondant fins/tails sorry my rocket knowledge escapes me at the moment. Cut and laminate a circular picture of your son and buttercream it to the rocket. It will look like he's on the rocket getting ready to launch into space. Just an idea!

I can't find a photo but I did see one with a plastic space ship and it was taking off from the "moon", the cake was a bowl shape but the texture of the moon was crushed oreos in the icing and the chocolate discs/melts were kept whole and placed here and there on the moom for the craters. Very cute, I'll look for the photo. Good Luck - can't wait to see the photos!

Great ideas! I need to start baking today so I'll have plenty of time to work some magic, but I'm still not 100% certain where I'm going!

I have a clear vision of my planet or moon, but not of the spacecraft or rocket. With some of your suggestions I'm almost considering ditching the planet and just making a rocket.

I'm a very visual person and have a hard time creating something in my head from scratch. Wouldn't make a good designer at all!! I'm better if I have a model to work from. My son doesn't have any space toys and his books are all real life photos of galaxies and of course things like the space shuttle. I'm thinking of something more cartoony in it's appearance rather than realistic. Maybe I should do some more google searches and see what I can find.

Until then... thanks and keep the ideas coming! thumbs_up.gif
