I also live very far from home. I missed seeing my grand-ma by 1 day. I was fortunate enough to be visiting when my mom passed. It does not make it any easier and I understand your anguish.

I am so very sorry to hear that. I lost 2 of my brothers witin 2 years, both with cancer. So we do the Relay For Life each year in their memory. Your brother and your mother would be so touched by this tribute. I am sure it is very difficult for you to be away from home and family at this time. I will be thinking of you and your family.

As an artist himself, he will appreciate the cake you made in his memory singing his songs. I'm sure that somehow he was with you when you made the cake, inspiring you, trying to help you cope. My family is scattered all over the world as well and I know exactly what you are going through. But your brother will live on in you and all who remember him. So sorry for your loss. Your cake is beautiful. Bet it was very cathartic making the cake and having the flood of memories. I too have lost a brother(been nearly 12 years now) who was very talented--muscially.

Thank you all. Your words give me strength at these trying times. My nephew in VA just made a song for him. He posted it in his myspace. I guess it's our way of coping with the loss to find artistic ways of saying that we will truly miss the greatest artist in the family.

First off I'm so very sorry for your loss. I lost my brother also almost 2 yrs ago at the young at of 42. He was in a boating accident and we never recovered his body. I know first hand what kind of loss you are going through.
I'm sure your brother was right by your side as you were decorating and singing and very proud of the wonderful cake you made in his memory. I will keep your family in my prayers and thoughts. Your brother will always be with you in your heart!

i, too, know the pain of losing a brother, and friday, april 6th, made 8 years since he went away. he died in the line of duty, which i'm proud of, but that doesn't take away from the fact that one second i was one person, whole and complete, and within a blink of an eye, literally, i became someone else, forever changed. you had great memories with him, that's apparent from your beautiful cake tribute, and those never die. they may fade over the years from being so well loved, but they stay forever in your heart. i was not with my brother when he passed either, and don't even remember telling him goodbye the last time i saw him, but that doesn't diminish the fact that he knew, as did your brother, that your love was constant, this much i am sure of.
cry your tears, make as many cakes as you need, do what your heart tells you you need to do to deal with the physical loss of this special part of your life. smile through your pain, and cry through your laughs, and if you need to talk, we're all here. you, nor your family, is alone.
Our bodies are only a shell. Your brother will always be with you...I pray that you find comfort in that. I know how hard it may be dealing with the physical body being gone...the soul, nor the spirit ever dies. I am so sorry for your loss and I feel for you. My heart breaks for your loss. I know what you are going through, I too lost a younger brother to cancer at age 44. At the time I thought the pain off that loss would never cease, but as time has passed, nearly 2 years, it has lessened.
