hello everyone i got a question.....

i no with cakes u need dowels placed in them for stability, but what kind do most of u use? i saw wooden ones, and there really thin, so i dont no how they stabelize, but. and also, wat are the rules for doing this? like do u need 1 dowel for every layer? or 2 every layer? if anyone could help that would be awesome... also since there made out of wood, does the wood splinter into the cake? do u reuse dowels?

thanks alot everyone!!!

Hello,
I use 1/4 inch dowels and if the layer to be stabelized is say 6 in then I use 4 dowels. The bigger the layer to be held up the more dowels you use. I do use the wooden ones and haven't had any trouble with splinters.

Hope this helps.

I used the wooden dowels many years ago before the plastic were available. I did have trouble w/ them shifting at times. I prefer the plastic and cut them w/a serrated knife. You can use them over and over as long as the length is OK. I use 3 in a 6 in cake, 4 for 8", 4 or 5 for 10", 5 or 6 for 12" and 6-8 for 14 " etc. Be sure to measure in the center and then make the dowels the same length no matter if the cake varies or the cake will not be level. Good Luck!
