I just remembered a cake disaster I had a couple of years ago.
I was making a tiered bridal shower cake and I wrapped the cakes and put them in the fridge overnight. Well unbeknownst to me, my dh had been marinating these ribs for the smoker and he put them in the same fridge I had my cakes in. Well what do you know...when I took the cakes out the next morning to work on them, they stunk to high heaven of garlic and all that crap he used for the marinade. I didnt' have time to re-bake all those cakes so I just decorated them and delivered the cake as is icon_surprised.gif She never called to say how the cakes turned out and I didn't bother to call her either...I never received another cake order from her again...and I know why!!! Isn't that awfull??!!!!! icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

That's really something how cakes will take on an odor like that. I had a cake to deliver this Satuday afternoon and we had cereal for breakfast because I didn't want to take the chance that my cake would to taste like bacon ;o)
There is also a person who does cakes in our area that smokes. Iv'e walked in her shop and seen her smoking and decorating. We don't smoke and don't like her cakes because we can taste that in her cakes.

I would assume that it is illegal - I'm sure that the health dept. wouldn't appreciate it at the very least!!!

I remember reading in the health dept report on the famous cake decorator (it was in another post...can't remember who) but it said they were in violation for drinking coffee while decorating so smoking has GOT icon_eek.gif to be illegal. Blech!

oh, now that makes sense, here you can't drink or eat in your food preparation area, even if you're baking from home.

PS: Now knowing this, im even more suprised she hasnt been reported, if customers come in and find her smoking, then it's something she does on a regular basis and is not hiding.

That's disgusting. Please don't tell me she has a licensed business. She should be reported.

OMG! icon_eek.gif That is downright NASTY! What if she gets ashes into something? Ewww! She wouldn't have a shop at all if she got caught doing that in New York. Smoking is practicly banned from everywhere in NY State. No smoking even in the bars. If you want to light up you have to stand outside. It's awful when it's raining though...a wet smoker smells worse than a wet dog!

I'm not in the cake business, although I make a lot of them as a hobby..
That's exactly why I have a separate fridge in the garage mainly just for my cakes. or party food when I'm entertaining.. I don't think it made them sick..just smelly.. oh well... icon_smile.gif
