Alpine Or Sweetex Hi Ratio Shortening
Decorating By dolfin Updated 25 Oct 2007 , 1:22am by madgeowens
OK, I have searched every where online for hi ratio shortening and the places I've found all charge more for the shipping and handling than the shortening it self!! 52.00 for 50#'s and shipping $82.00. Is there anywhere in southern california that sells it off the shelf? HELP!!!
Have you tried The Baker's Kitchen? I believe their shipping fee for a 50lb box for Alpine or Sweetex is only $14.00 in the US. This is where I get Alpine from all the time. They are fast and very nice people!
I just got some from Do It With Icing in San Diego. I took the last of theirs though, if you're close to them, give them a call and they can order it for you.
I have to ask this... what is the differnence between regular and high ratio?? I see this talked about a lot but have never understood. why would you want to use high ratio over regular??
All I know is that you don't get that shortening after-taste with hi-ratio. And your frosting seems sweeter. Anyone else?

It show $16.75 for shipping to when I checked, still very cheap.
For those who do not want to buy bulk shortening.... I have discovered that generic shortening does not have the chemically taste like name brand Crisco does...and some of it is really nice. You have to shop around different stores to find out which generic is best. Walmart's generic stinks but some of the grocery stores actually have a nice, firm, tasteless shortening. Try it! (Here in PA so far I like Pathmark brand the best of what I've tried).
I picked up some generic shortening a month or so ago without really looking at it. I got it home and looked at the label. The ingrediants said it contains "meat solids"?!?!?! LOL, needless to say, I read all labels and make sure I know what I'm getting nowadays. ....grosses me out to think about what meat solids might be. Yikes!
Don't understand that - my cart total is $87.99. ($73.99 & $14.00.):

Might want to call before placing your order to find out why your shipping/handling is higher than stated on website.

That's odd becuse it doesn't ask for a zip code. I just clicked on your link and it says $16.75 again, odd
Welcome to the Twilight Zone.
LOL, Thanks, I'm going to have that tune stuck in my head until I go to sleep now, LOL
Okay, mom2seven, how many items did you have in your cart? That would increase the ship a bit. I still get $14.00 and get this! it is only $4.00 more if I order 2 50lb cubes!!! What a bargain!! That is why I love the Baker's Kitchen!

I only had the shorting in the cart (tried both brands). Shipping for 2 50lbs cubes was $25.00.
This is still way cheap, it's just odd we don't get the same shipping cost.
The 50lb of sweetex was gonna run 16.75 shipping but the 50lb of alpine was 14.00
good price on shipping but...
50lb IS 50lb, ain't it?
but the sweetex costs more so maybe the added shipping amount is contributed to having to be extra careful with the higher priced product? maybe?
Some websites automatically know where you are by your cookies - and calculate the shipping based on your location. Even though you didn't enter that information, they already know - big brother is watching.

I forgot about this, I'll bet thats way the shipping was off (I'm in Texas).
Yeah, everything is bigger in TX!! LOL.
You should ask why the shipping is off cause I'm in CA and it is still 14.00.

That's an awesome price, but when I go to the sysco site I can't find the shortening to save my life!! Where are they hiding it? Am I just not looking in the right place? Sheesh, you think they'd let you search by item number or something... it's like they don't WANT you to buy it!
I am not sure where you are in so cal, but Pila's Pantry sells sweetex off the shelf. I've only been to the location in Norco, but I'm sure they would also carry it in their Temecula location as well. I don't remember the price though, sorry.
Thanks, I will try Pila's Pantry in Temecula. I am not to far from them. (Well closer than the other places).
I can't understand why Crisco is getting a bad rap....I use it with butter in my buttercream and its really delicious. Tell me what you all have by way of negatives in using Crisco....convince me...
