I read a posting here somewhere on a great tool someone found from Sears to cut wooden dowels. They put the part number and everything in it!
Can someone direct me to that post? Or repost it?
Thanks!!!!
I missed that post but what I use is a pair of dog toe-nail clippers (new of course) and they work great!
Deb
I never thought of dog clippers. I found a pair for my dog at Walmart and now that I look at them, they'd be perfect and strong enough to cut through a dowel.
Thanks for the great idea
You're welcome! I went to cut my dogs nails once and wondered "hmmm - I wonder if these clippers would work for the dowels?" so I tried one and it worked great! (Of course I didn't use those dowels on a cake!) I was getting tired of using a saw on them!

I'm not sure, but I think it was the handi-cut cutters. I just found a pair in DH toolchest and it cut strap ties like paper. Haven't tried dowels yet.
Is this the thread you were looking for?

I just found it in the how do I forum the title was how do I cut an even dowel, not sure how to add the link but that is where you will find it!!!!!!!!!
Hey loriemoms why don't you just use straws? I have used that often and was happy with the cost.
Thanks stephanie214 you beat me to it and with the link. Darn you type fast!
That is so funny
I use to type 106 words a minute, now I can hardly type 30...wish I had kept up with my typing. What's the saying? "use it or lose it."...I lost it
I just got my handi-cut from Sears for 9.77 on Sunday the 26th because someone forgot to take the sale sign off it (sale was over 3/23). Their loss.
Does that thing cut the dowel without smashing it? I've been using some kind of cutter I bought at Home Depot, the sales guy said it would do the trick. It cuts the dowels great, but it smashes them in the process!
Where do you buy the plastic straws that are strong enough to use for stacking? All I ever see are the thinish ones in the grocery store and they don't seem strong enough.
Thanks in advance!
Linda
I use straws from McDonald's. We go there once a month as a treat for the kids. At least they think it's a treat. Yuck!! Anyway, I grab a few extra when I'm there. I haven't found big fat ones like those in a store yet.
ARe you guys talking about the "anvil" type cutters?
I think you can find those at most hardware stores not just at sears. When I worked in the trim dept. of a housing manufacturer we used the anvil type cutters and they worked great on the trim without messing it up i am sure they would work great on dowels as well.
My husband bought me all new gardening supplies for my birthday...and when I was making my daughter's birthday cake I realized I didn't have anything to cut the dowels with...so I opened my new pruning sheers....OMG!!!! What a find. Nice clean cut. I was amazed. Now I need to buy a pair for gardening.
I agree...any hardware store or garden center is the way to go. You'll find something. These are for roses, so they worked great, and they are not big.
