On another thread someone posted a site, Earlene's cakes, well I am just blown away by this woman's talent!!! Her cakes are amazing!!! With almost all of her cakes she has this "border" at the base. If you go here
http://www.earlenescakes.com/Doris.htm
and scroll down to "Doris #1-7" you can see a good photo of what I mean. It looks like she used satin fabric but I suspect it is fondant very carefully manipulated to look like satin. It is the "poofy" area right at the base of the cake. I love the look of it.
My dream cake and something that I would aspire to is;

It is just an incredible piece of art. I wish she had put how many hours it took beside her cakes. I'm just amazed at them. I can only dream of being anywhere near that talented!!!

I am assuming you are referring to her "puff base." Earlene sells the directions on her website. I absolutely love the way it looks in her pictures, but its one of those things that I just never get around to ordering. Maybe soon!

I do know there are others posted on the web, but I have never been able to find them.

Good luck!

I believe that the area that you are referring to is actually the stand that the cake is sitting on covered with fabric. I've seen other designers use this and you're right, it is beautiful.

I always thought it WAS fabric. Now I'm not so sure...

So it is fabric???? I'm really surprised....I honestly thought she used the fondant for it. It really makes the cakes quite striking!!! Incredible talent she has.

I agree Earlene's cakes are masterpieces. From waht I can see of that border it looks like piped hearts. She would have used probably a round tip and you just start on one side and gather some icing and pull down and lessen pressure to bring to a point. Then do the same on the other side bringing the points together.
The puff at the bottom of her cakes are satin. If you go back to her website the instructions on how to make the puffs are there.
Hope that helps!
