I need to make a basketweave out of BC. Now, is there a way to mark on the cake to be sure it is all measured correctly on the cake? First< I am going to practice on a dummy. By the way, thanks for the tip about Dallas Foam. I got 14 dummies for the price of what it cost me for a 6 and 9 inch her in L. A.

I don't mark my cakes. I use the width of the tip as a guide.

I use the tip as well, but if you want a wider weave, you can use a tooth pick and aruler to measure!

Wrap a narrow piece of wax paper around the cake (you may have to tape a couple pieces together to make it around depending on the size of the cake. When wrapped around, they should meet and not overlap. This gives you the circumference of the cake. Remove the wax paper and start folding it in half over and over until the width is about the distance apart you want your basketweave to be. Now, unfold the paper and wrap it back around the cake. Using the edge of a spatula, press into the side of the cake at each fold. This will mark your cake for the weave. Remove the paper and pick a place to start. Do your first vertical piping on one line and start doing the weave. I use the width of the tip to determine the vertical spacing. HTH!

In my cake course, we learned to start by marking the iced cake with a straight edge spatula at 12:00 and 6:00, then 9:00 and 3:00, then 2:00 and 7:00, etc. you just keep going until you get all the vertical lines you need. I hope that makes sense.
