In addition to the lamb cake I am doing for church on Easter I will have a cross cake. Couldn't find one in Santa Clara Valley so I ordered one from Wilton. My idea is to place the cross cake on a sheet cake but I'm stumped for ideas on how to decorate. White buttercream and maybe a basket weave around the base of the sheet cake and cornelli icing on the cross. I'm thinking of piping a rope design around the base of the basket weave as well as the base of the cross with highlights in a pretty Robin's egg blue. I'm also thinking of trying to drape some fondant across the cross (looking like a piece of fabric, blue?) but not sure if to lay it diagonally across or drape on one side and under the back of the cross to come across the other side. Would this be too bulky? What if I just have the two sides streaming down on either side of the cross looking as if it is draped around? Not much experience with fondant so I don't know how drapeable it is. Thought I would also pipe "He is Risen" but not sure how to place it, diagonally across or maybe on a little fondant plaque square in the middle of the cross on top of the drape. Also thinking of using that new Satin Icing recipe that was just posted. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks, kittikakes. May I ask for a few details?
What is the sparkly stuff in the middle?
Are those buttercream roses?
What kind of border is that?
What tip did you use for the blue border?

Thanks for your help and what a beauuuutiful cake!

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of draping the fondant "fabric" over the cross, I think if I were you I would make it an optical illusion of sorts and drape the one large piece across the front of the cross and then use two smaller pieces one on each side as though it were coming out from under the cross....I think you're right about actually wrapping it under the cross it might be too bulky and cause your cross to become mis-shapen. I also love the idea of the fondant plaque I think that would look really good!!!! You may even want to put the plaque on the side on the front of the sheet cake, kinda at the base of the cross....there might not be room if you have the fabric draped on the cross....this sounds like it will turn out to be an amazing cake, I can't wait to see pics.

Hi KHalstead, thanks for your ideas! One thing though, I have a nice handwriting but have not perfected my icing writing so that is out of the question. Any suggestions? Do you think it would look too hokey to use the Wilton cut out letters (for fondant) for my "He is Risen" plaque? The font is sort of a rounded block and it would be better to use a Gothic or at least a pretty script font for this. Any suggestions? Have you tried the transfer gel technique?

Samsgranny,

The sparkle stuff is a fine disco dust blown all over top.
Yes they are BC roses.
There is no border I used stars and then the edging acted as the border using a up and down zigzag motion with the large open star tip ...4B.I hate trying to smooth the sides so I just do this.

Hi KiddieKakes, did you split your cake and fill it as well? How hard is that going to be to split a cross cake? Thanks for your help.

No..I didn't split it..I baked two crosses and inverted them to give me the thicker look.I used the wilton pan with beveled sides. When I baked one it looked really skinny so I baked another and flipped one inside out and stuck the other on top.Viola!!
