My gosh! Is this happening to any of the rest of you who have your own websites? Someone (from Mongolia apparently) keeps dumping a bunch of porn links into my guestbook on my website. I tried blocking that address, but every time (which is a few times a day) they signed in using a different address. I changed the number of characters in a single word to be fewer than what is in a website link and they got around that and then I disabled the button taking you to my guestbook and they got around that. So I finally took the guestbook off completely. I will try to put it back on later hoping that I have worked my way out of their rotation. I want my entire website to be family friendly so that anyone of any age can safely browse. I sure don't want someone's kid to be able to access porn from something they found on my site!

I'm so sorry to hear this has happened.

When I read your post quickly, I thought you said someone from "Magnolia" not "Mongolia"....and I thought, "Magnolia Bakery" is trashing other people's sites???!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I would advise you to contact the Attorney General's office in your area. They may have a division that can assist you in finding out who it is.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I agree that you should contact the attorney general, but make it the US Attorney General. There was questioning recently about sites like this, and spam E-mails from foreign lands on the news. Apparently there is some committee on K Street looking into this.

Becky, thanks for the tip on not having a guest book. Wise advice.

Some people are scum. A few months back I found adult links on my site too, under the poll results screens for two polls I was running on my site. I removed them and found a new host. So far so good.
If you have a website it's good to examine it everyday just in case some sicko has found a way to spread this filth.

Sorry this happened to you. Hope you're able to keep him from corrupting your site further. icon_wink.gif

I guess I could turn them in to the attorney general, but since it is from a different address every time they may be hard to track down. I like having a guest book because people actually do put in great comments about the cakes or cookies they have ordered. It is the best advertisement. Fortunately, I had mine set up to where I would receive an e-mail every time someone signed my guest book. At least I could delete those messages asap - or as soon as I checked my e-mail which sometimes could be awhile.

A lady in my area has a cool feature on her site. She places images of thank you cards on her site. It's really cool.

Her main link: http://www.icedart.com/

Testimonial page: http://www.icedart.com/testimonials.aspx

At least this way you could have complete control over what was posted.

I love the idea Wendysue! I could always just type in the comments myself from e-mails that I get or thank you cards. I really like the way that icedart has the "create a cake" feature on her website. I may have to play around with that idea for my site as well.

I loved that idea too! So much that I emailed her and told her so. I hadn't seen anything like this on any other cake site. She told me that she did this program herself, has some sort of background in computers if I remember right. Anyway this woman did my brother's wedding cake, back before I was into cakes. icon_wink.gif

While we are on the topic of rude people using your website for their purposes....I had this problem...and learned the following:

I started getting HUNDREDS icon_eek.gif of return to sender emails. Apparently someone was using my domain @acookieobsession.com and filling in a ficticious user. So they send out their SPAM with my domain as the sender and I get the undeliverable or blocked by spam detector emails. HUNDREDS each day. After doing research i found out that

1. there is NO way to prevent it since they are not using a server I own, just my name. icon_cry.gif

2. If a recipient actually looked at the headers they could tell it was not my company (how many people can do that realistically?).

3. I just have to use spam blocker myself and delete the mail

4. If you have a direct link on your website i.e. [email protected] (I did) that is how they get your info...a web software probgram broswes for address plainly written, puts into some program and proceeds to spam people. So, you should change that to a link...like "Click here to email us" and have the address bring up a link.

5. Add a SPAM disclaimer to your website...so people know it is not really you. I had several people request I stop spamming them...I sent thema letter and promptly added my spam disclaimer to my site" Feel free to copy it in whole or part for your site if you like.

Thanks....hope I helped...I will go back to delelting emails now!

wow! You really got hit hard, cookieobsession! Some people have nothing better to do with their time than to write programs that hurt others. You did make some good points on prevention. Thanks!

Kerri,
I would think that even though this person is using different email addresses each time that he or she might still be able to be tracked down b/c she is, most likely, on the same server each time. I'd turn her in. It couldn't hurt. Best of luck!

Chocomama has a good point. They could track this person down by their IP address. icon_wink.gif
