Hi, all ~

Who's tried this recipe and what are you reviews? I just got the book and am ready to try it. How's the taste? Is it very sweet? How does it pipe?

Thanks,
Julie

I love it. It is soft but pipes so smooth. You might have trouble doing roses with it. It does not crust. it whips up light and airy, kind of like a whipped cream icing and is not really sweet, in my opinion. If it would crust it would be my every day icing. It is so easy to make and takes color really well.

So how do you get it smooth if it doesn't crust?

I've never used it before but you could use a nice warm spatula. I have a whipped icing that I use that doesn't crust but I can smooth it with my warmed spatula.

This is the best icing! But, no...you can't use the viva technique on it. I've used a metal spatula dipped in hot water and dried to smooth. I have a small Get Well cake in my pics I used this icing on so you can see I didn't get it perfectly smooth. It is very tasty, but light, not greasy. HTH

jdelectables...

No ..there is really no way of smoothing this icing except a really good spatula.I have a small plastic flat spatula that my mom gave me from along time ago and I use that.Excellent!! I just spin my turntable and hold it against the cake.

MomLittr,

Meringue will not help as this recipe is almost 80% shortening.

YUM, YUM, YUM...this recipe is excellent! I used it for the first time this weekend & LOVE IT! It is super easy to work with & not overly sweet. It pipes & smooths like a dream! Check out my pics, the hamburger & happy birthday w/roses are both with this icing. Try it. You won't be sorry. thumbs_up.gif

I was asked to do a "not so sweet" buttercream icing, so I used this. I had HUGE success. They all loved it and talk about it and talk about. It's not my favorite, because I like a stiffer icing for piping. Also, it tasted too much crisco. I'm used to 3 times the amount of sugar in my icing.

Here's a little hint. I got a ton of cake orders by using this as a filling, mixed with Jif creamy peanut butter. It is AMAZING! I just added a spoonful of peanut butter - enough to make it taste like peanut butter, but still feel light and airy. People keep asking me for the recipe for this filling. I'm not the hugest peanut butter fan, but I have to admit - I've never tasted a PB filling as good as this.

Peachez-

Did you pipe your roses directly on the cake with the WB icing or use a nail? I have heard that the icing is not real good for flowers and yours turned out beautiful!

Thanks
Holli

Thanks Holli! The roses on the top of the cake are gumpaste...you probably knew that...but the rosebuds I just piped directly onto the cake

My personal experience with this frosting is that it tastes wonderful. Very light yet creamy. It is very loose, though. I like using a firmer frosting, myself. As for everyone that tried it...about 50% of the guests liked it, but didn't LOVE it. The rest like the 50/50 butter crisco recipe better.

It's always good to try different frostings, because everyone has different tastes, and overall, it was frustrating to smooth...even with the warm spatula.

By the way...I love the idea to add peanut butter and use as a filling....I have to try that!!!

Good Luck
Angie

Okay, YUM! I just tried this today and put it on a chocolate cake that I had in the freezer. This frosting is sooooo good! It is like whip cream! Very light. I didn't think it tasted like crisco at all and I was worried about that! You must try it. I'm going to use this as my "whipped frosting".

I made it for the first time today and I took some of this and some regular (1/2 butter, 1/2 crisco) buttercream to work (with 2 boxes of disposible spoons) and had my co-workers do a taste test. Whimsical Bakehouse bc won hands down. 20 people tasted them and only 1 liked the regular bc.

I'm in the minority--I can't stand this icing! I've tried quite a few other Whimsical Bakehouse recipes and have liked all of them, but this was not for me. I just don't like the mouth-feel of the shortening. When I made this, rather than waste it, I mixed it with a batch of all-butter buttercream and it tasted fine.

I would say if you like light, fluffy icing, and you don't mind shortening in your icing, this would be a good icing for you to try. If you're an all-butter fan, don't bother.

It was pretty easy to make, by the way, and the recipe makes a lot of icing.

A putty knife or paint trimmer works well to smooth out icing if a spatula isn't doing it for you.
