Ever heard of how a sea louse gives birth? The babies actually eat their way out of the mother. Pretty gross, but it's true, and you guessed it, no more momma.
Anyway, the whole cake is totally awsome, I LOVE IT!!!!! Fantastic job.

I think it's very clever and different.
It's the fact that it looks like an amputee that I think is throwing people.

OK, answering straight away without looking at the other posts - it looks like a baby bursting out of it's mother's belly ala Alien lol (but the baby's much prettier than an Alien!). I hope that doesn't offend you, that's not my intention - just the thing that I saw (which is what you asked for - brutal & honest!).

Now I'm going back to read the other answers!

The cake itself is so cute... I would LOVE that cake for myself as a birthday cake or just because cake... great job!

The image is a little disturbing... I don't know which part bothers me most.. the missing head/legs or the open flesh... icon_redface.gif SORRY! Maybe a lil stage with a spotlight on the baby by itself might work? Just an idea... icon_biggrin.gif

You asked for brutal honesty, so I hope you don't take offense. The figure is well done, but I think the cake would look so much better if you just have the baby on top of the ruffles and lose the limb-less body. I think people are going to have a hard time figuring out what you were going for with this cake and it is a little disturbing.
I think the rest of the cake is very pretty and I love the roses & I think if you took off the mother under the baby it would be a very sweet cake.

omg thanks for the laugh from beginning to end lol I am still sitting here chuckling and couldnt wait to sign in this morning to find out the answer. Now that you have explained it and I can see the whole cake I have to say WELL DONE but I would seriously lose the mom or give her more body parts ie: head arms and legs. It's refreshing to see someone ask for honest opinions and not take offense when they get them. I really love your cake and the colors.

honestly, it looks scary for a shower cake or anyother type of cake. baby is coming out of mom's belly and she has no head, arms and legs. Even if she did don't think is appropiate for a baby's cake.

Maybe a longer dress (hiding the amputated legs) and a simple (no face) head with hair would help. Great idea though! It is really a cute cake idea.

I couldn't figure this one out. I could tell it was a baby, but the rest looked weird. I thought it might be a REALLY icon_eek.gif full diaper with the babies legs contorted to the back. Totaly did not see the mommy thing untill I red the other posts. I agree with some of the others. It is a little disturbing...looking at it makes my c-section scar ach a little. Maybe just the baby poping out of the ruffels or a baby poping/rolling out of a cloth diaper (Like the stork dropped it off) or maybe cracking out of and egg shell. Other than that it is a beautiful cake. Love the colors, roses and ruffels. icon_smile.gif

Okay I didn't read the other posts - looks like a baby coming out of a momma's belly? Although it took me awhile to see the body of the mom.... it kinda looked like a huge dog bone when I first looked at it.

I think the baby is cute but popping out of mom like that is a little creepy to me. I'd hate to see you lose all that work b/c I know you must have put a lot of time into it..... I guess it depends on who the cake was for - me, I'm a little creeped out by the baby popping out of the mom..... it just doesn't say "cute and adorable" to me like I feel a baby shower cake should.... I'm assuming it's a baby shower anyway.

I just read the other posts now so I'm editing - I think the idea of the baby on a stage sounds cute - the "now debuting" or whatever.... I think if you added a head to the body it would be even creepier - I gotta just say take the baby OUT of the body and have baby popping out of cake, out of ruffles, or out of a box like a present - NOT out of mom! I understand the "alien" references.....

The rest of the cake is cool - I like the non-traditional colors. Just the baby popping out of mom is disturbing... I know it's not your intention but it just doesn't feel like it's done in "good taste" w/ that imagery..... I know if I saw that at a baby shower I would really wonder what the decorator was thinking..... Take that topper off and the rest of the cake is great!

I think this is incredibly disturbing! I would lose the mommy part and just have her coming out of the cake. Speaking as a mother of two-I wouldn't want that on my cake-too scary!

But your work is GREAT!!!

i couldn't figured it out right away, but when i did it made me a bit sick. I'm not at all very sensitive, just not liking this cake. wait let me refrase that, i like the cake, not the colors (mostly the black, and black IS my favorite color) i also don't like the idea of baby bursting outta the belly. I read your reply explaining, but i still don't think it's appropriate. JMHO.sorry.
After reading the replies, i'm getting more and more creeped out. ok, running out of post.

I see it's a baby popping out of a belly. It is kind of disturbing. IF this is for a shower, can't you just have the baby popping out of the top of the cake and forgo the chopped up mommy? I just think it is a bit on the disturbing side. You asked for honest opinions.

Like the whimiscal roses. BUT......... I cringe with it all mixed together.

As others posted "it looks like the alien from the movie" . That was my very first thought. While it's an awesome job on the work you have done I was disturbed by the whole thing.

If it is a cake for mother who has a since of humor and just had c-section I MIGHT be willing to lighten up a little on how I feel. But if it isn't, I have a tendency to be a little offended with the whole idea since I am a mother of 2 c-sections. If anyone had a c-section those are not amusing nor one I would want displayed on my baby shower cake. Especially from a body with no head or legs. icon_confused.gif To ME, that would be like making a cake with the child being born naturally. (Sorry)

hun if this is for a good friend that you know will find great humor in the whole idea, then go for it, (It's for her) but please understand that others at the party may find it offensive so don't be hurt if whispers in the back ground are not what you want to hear.

LOVED the individual pieces (as mentioned above) Excellent job.

Bless you in all your work. Your work is awesome.

It's good work, but not something I'd like. To me it looks like the poor mom got beheaded, her limbs lopped off and her belly slashed, then someone stuck a cute doll in her remains to shock whoever found her body. The death theme's reinforced by black roses, which I think are gorgeous but in combination with the body, just macabre.

I really appreciate all the opinions. As I said, it is for a mom who already had her baby and it's her last child (they hope). She is not frilly or girly or into the cutesy baby stuff. That's why the color scheme is a bit untraditional for a baby shower. Some of the roses I'll be adding will be pink too.

I'm really amused at how many people were disgusted by some gumpaste. It's not her flesh being peeled away, it's the dress! It's suppose to be unrealistic and a bit comical in the unexpectedly popping out way.

I can definitely see the black roses as macabre so they were moved down to the bottom. Still keeping them, just not around the mom. I added an embossed skirt kind of thing to cover the amputee legs. I really didn't want to make legs and have them hanging over the cake. Head or no head? I kind of think the head looks quite like a funeral...

There will be the marquis looking sign behind/above them and some more lighter colored rose things

This is not to be rude so please don't take it that way. You might want the think about the response you are getting here about the "popping out of the stomach thing" some...especially me never seen it as the dress. First thought, first observation....until explained. I know that was not what you were going for but that is what was perceived. The guests at the party may see it the same way? I myself, know how disappointing it is when you create something unique that no one else gets and I get tired of trying to make others see it. . It's frustrating. But your responses here maybe something to concider.

Head or no head?

For me it wasn't the headless/legless body thing. Those type of cakes are adorable. For me, it was the combination of the two together.

It's for your friend and only you know her. You will know what will please her the most. thumbs_up.gif

Best wishes

Maybe just take the baby out of the belly and finish the bottom and put that on top of the cake. That would be cuter.
