A good friend has asked me to make her dog a cake for his 4th bday. I'm not an animal lover, so I'm really short on ideas. I need a RECIPE? What do dogs eat? How can I make a mixture that will be OK for a dog, but stay together like a cake..and not be disgusting to have in a kitchen. What do I ice it with??? I'm wondering if anyone has ever made a cake for a dog.
thanks!!!

Dogs shouldn't have chocolate, but you can substitute carob chips...also, I read they shouldn't consume regular flour...so I think you can substitute whole wheat.

I'm looking for a good recipe also...but have only come across ones that use honey and molasses. I just want a no hassle recipe that will bake and hold up like a cake.

If anyone out there has any good EASY recipes that don't use a cake mix, please do share!

Why dont you do a meat loaf baked in round pans? Then use mashed potatos or something for "icing"? You should leave the onions out of the meat loaf though.

I make my doggie cakes out of cornbread. I stir in a jar of strained meat baby food. Plus, some grated cheese and a little chopped summer sausage. I ice with an icing made out of thick, thick, THICK gravy (evaporated milk chicken broth and flour) and then beaten with Crisco until it's good piping consistency. They love it!

Here's a recipe that I found on the internet.
BIRTHDAY CAKE FOR DOGS
1lb ground beef-extra lean
8 eggs
1 cup oat meal
½ cup cracker crumbs
Using electric mixer, blend all items together until completely blended. Pour into an oblong cake pan sprayed with non-stick spray.
Bake in oven at 350 for 25- 35 minutes. Allow to cool. Carefully invert on to plate and frost with non-fat sour cream or imitation potato topping. Store leftovers in refrigerator.

Found this:

1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup cooking oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup honey (optional)
1 egg

Mix the dry ingredients. Add the remaining ingredients and mix quickly. Bake in a greased ring mold at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. You may frost this cake with low fat cottage cheese and decorate with some carrot pieces. Store in the refrigerator.
(Dogs will eat this without the honey added)

and this... (it says cupcakes, but I'm sure you could bake it in cake pans as well)

3 cups water
2 carrots, shredded
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons honey
2 ripe bananas, mashed
4 cups whole-wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, blend the water, carrots, egg, vanilla and honey. Add the mashed bananas.
In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, nutmeg and cinnamon.
Pour the flour mixture into the carrot mixture and mix thoroughly.
Spray a 12-cup cupcake pan with nonstick spray. Fill each cup about three-quarters full. Bake 50 to 60 minutes. Cook before serving.

Makes 24 cupcakes.

Frosting:
8 oz. cream cheese
2 tbl. yogurt
2 tbl. honey
2-1/2 tbl. flour

For the frosting; combine the cream cheese at room temperature, honey, and yogurt until smooth. Add enough flour to thicken the frosting to a good spreading consistency.

I would highly suggest running your recipe by a vet. Certain breeds are very allergic to wheat flour. A great source that is very reliable is Three Paw Bakery. Please check them out. They have plenty of dog only recipe books in the book stores.

I think you mean "three dog bakery" a chain. Yes they have books with recipes. Go to library or bookstore. And it is very important to check with a vet. NO CHOCOLATE. It can be FATAL to dogs. They cannot metabolize it properly and it acts like a poison.

My dogs love that stuff. And some of the recipes are good tasting to humans!
