I am so discouraged I have tried twice now to make a fondant bow and they end up looking like crap.I either make the loops to long or narrow...what is the secret.I know I can do it but it is beginning to make me wanna say "Forget it".Any suggestions?....any sizes recommended for strips?Thickness of fondant?

Hi Kiddiekakes,
I use chocolate clay for my bows and they turn out great! The chocolate is not so thin and floppy and i roll it out a little on the thick side (not paper thin). For an 8" round cake, my bottom loops are usually between 6 and 7" long and then get a little shorter as i build the bow up.
The other great thing about the chocolate is that i do not have to put anything inside the loop for support until the loop dries, it just stays where i put it immediately.
I'm with you KiddieKakes... I tried it once so far but it was not something I was excited about. I was going to try it again on the cake I have due Saturday but didn't feel like fussing with it.
I just made a chocolate fondant bow for a birthday cake. I make my own fondant using Toba Garrett's recipe...it's easy and it tastes good and I know exactly what's in it! For my bows, I roll out the fondant to about 1/4" and cut it into strips 1/2"X4". I like the look of a smaller loop, so that's why I make them only 1/2" wide. I drape the strips over a broom handle and let them sit for a minute or two to stretch slightly, then I pinch the ends together to make a point. I let them dry overnight, then I carefully slide them off the handle. I melt some chocolate (either white or dark, depending on the color of the fondant) then I place the pinched ends of the loops into the chocolate to form the bow.
