Hello, Maria. First you would have to register w/Ebay to buy or sell anything. Then, you can either bid on it or use the "Buy It Now" option. And, I did see that the shipping here to VA would be about $10 something. So, after you win the auction, you can either pay via Paypal, money order, cashiers check or personel check. If you want to pay via Paypal (which I usually do since it's worry free for me and it's faster), you have to register with Paypal also.

Hope this helps you! thumbs_up.gif

No- I wouldn't buy a cake from ebay. There are some available on our ebay too, (Australia) but they are for pick-up only....not delivery.

I don't think I'd buy anything edible from ebay at all. I think the risk for spoilage is so high???

I make these cakes all the time.....caramel and hard fudge icing. I really do not see anyway to ship them where they would not get damaged. They are very yummy though.

I actually had an ebay store for a short time. I sold cookies, petit fours, pies and such. Anything that was perishable was only sold for local delivery. I originally put up the store because it was a cheap way to display my goods for my local customers. I could tell them to go to this site to see my baked goods and they could order and pay right there. However, on ebay people stumble on your store and I actually had quite a few buyers that wanted the product shipped across the US. After a couple months I took the store down and set up a freewebs site. The main reason I took it down was because it wasn't cost effective to ship stuff. It was a real pain! People would blatently make up problems with there orders just to get you to send a new order. They would even threaten to give a bad review. But I never shipped a decorated cake, I don't see how you could.

Now I may be wrong here, they may have changed their rules, but I sold on Ebay for SOme Time a few years ago (before it became a scam fest) and one time I tried to sell a food item and my post was deleted because Ebay's rulkes stated nothing edible/no food items could be sold. Now like I said, they may have changed that rule. If not, Its probably just a matter of not enough staff to look over all the auctions to be sure rules aren't broken. I know they can't police all the auctions. Just an fyi.

Guidelines from EBay

Food

The sale of food is regulated by the federal government and most state governments. Sellers who list food and food-related products should familiarize themselves with these laws before listing such items on eBay. Prior to listing any food on eBay, sellers should read the Additional Information section to learn more about what food items are not permitted.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation

Limits on account privileges

Account suspension

Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

Loss of PowerSeller status

Additional Information Hide

Prohibited Food Items: For the safety of eBays members, sellers may not list the following food and food-related items on eBay:

Listings containing drug claims-that is, a claim that the item is intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in humans and/or animals (for example, pharmaceutical drugs, contact lenses, misbranded dietary supplements)

Non-pasteurized dairy products

Fruit and vegetable juice products that have not been heat pasteurized

Wild mushrooms

Expired military MREs (meals ready-to-eat), unless the MRE is considered a collectible item and is not intended for consumption (and the listing states the MRE is not intended for consumption).

Perishable items: Sellers who list perishable items should clearly identify in the item description the steps that they will take to ensure that the goods are delivered to the buyer safely. For example, sellers of perishable goods should offer overnight delivery and ensure that the goods are properly packaged.

Sealed Containers: All food and related products sold on eBay should be packaged or sealed to ensure that the buyer can identify evidence of possible tampering.

Expiration dates: All items must be delivered to buyers prior to a clearly marked expiration or "use by" date.

There are many federal and state laws that sellers must comply with when selling food on eBay. Some examples are:

Ingredients: There are federal and state laws that require labels to state, among other things, the food's ingredients, nutrition information, and place of manufacture.

Food Licenses: Virtually all states require food manufacturers and sellers to register with or obtain a license from the state.

Import/Export: There are restrictions on the import and export of many food products.

The links below can be used as a starting point for sellers to educate themselves about laws relating to food sales:

Gateway to Government Food Safety Information

FDA's Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service

National Food Processors Association

FDA Import Procedures

I ordered a cake from England for Christmas. From a woman I met at a cake class here in California.
It was a fruit cake and it took about 14 days to arrive. It arrived in a regular cake box within a anothe box no padding or stuffing or anything! Here is what it looked like when it arrived(it was covered in marzipan and then iced in royal icing):

Speaking of buying food items from unusual places...how bout when you're driving down a long empty road and out of nowhere you start seeing signs for Fresh Beef Jerkey Ahead...is that really beef? I tell my husband if you see a man with a chainsaw hiding in the bushes step on it!!! icon_eek.gif

I think that aside from the oddity of buying edibles on Ebay, there is just a general mistrucst of Ebay.

I have bought and sold there as well and there is such an opportunity for scams.

I always thouroughly investigate any deal beforehand.

Jus' sayin...

Besides their feedback, I have no references in order to trust their product. icon_smile.gif That make sense? I doubt eBay cakes are laced with arsenic, but they still could let their cats roam on their kitchen counters or other nasty practices that wouldn't necessarily kill me but would gross me out.

I don't eat at potluck dinners, either. Yuck! LOL

I'm freaky I guess. icon_biggrin.gif

LOL, I am with you on this. There are too many dirty people out there. You know the type that let the cat walk on the countertops while making a cake. Or the type that eats the cake if the cat accidentally steps or sit on the cake and think that's funny. Or worse, the cat or the dog licks the cake and They fix it up and eat it. If they can eat the cake and not worry about it they would have no problems giving it to someone else. Yes, Iworry about all these things, especially the people that use the washroom and don't wash their hands, lick the spatula and stick it back in the icing, leave eggs out on the table way longer than they should and the list goes on.

Yea, I am definately with you on this point LOL... I don't do pot lucks LOL.... And if I do I only eat what I prepare.

I peeked at Melba Ann's feedback, and there are some SELLERS who left her feedback stating "you make the best cakes" when SHE purchased something from THEM. Now, that makes it seem even more odd.

LOL well to jsut say that jsut because we find a cat sitting on the cake funny or for MYSELF i'd fix up a cake that the dog's ate, doesn't nesscarily mean i'd sell the cake the same way. Though, your right in saying that the people on Ebay, we would never know. And they could jsut as wlel be those kind of people. icon_biggrin.gif
