I'm usually just lurking around and don't say much; I admire the talent and enjoy the comraderie so evident. icon_smile.gif

BUT.... *looks around nervously*....ummmm.... what are the chances that Ebay-cake-seller is a CC member?

That having been said, I have to admit, I would never consider buying homemade food off of Ebay. icon_razz.gif

So...I was intrigued by this selling cakes on Ebay since I am a regular Ebay buyer / seller myself. I never thought of doing a search thoug for someone selling cakes???!!! First, I never would I buy, It kindof grosses me out not really knowing who or where the cake is coming from and I had a couple questions ... So, I emailed the seller and here was my question and their reply (I see her all caps key must still be stuck).

My Question:
I am impressed at your feedback of how well this cake ships and the rave reviews for your delicious cakes! As far as shelf life of the cake is that refridgerated or lefto on the counter. Do you decorate cakes with additional icing or is it just the packaging? Wanted to also know if you are a professional baker with a business or licened in your state to bake and sell from your home?
Thanks!

Response:
THANKS FOR THE INTEREST IN OUR CAKES ON EBAY. YES WE ARE VERY PROUD OF OUR AWARD WINNING CAKE AND EBAY HAS BEEN GOOD TO US. THE 100% FB IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US. THIS CAKE IS WELL PRESERVED IN REGARD TO THE HI TEMPS WE BURN SUGARS TO DEVELOP THIS UNIQUE ICING. IT IS BEST SERVED AT ROOM TEMP AND IF SOMEONE CHOSES TO REFRIDGERATE WE SUGGEST TO LET SET BEFORE SERVING TO GET TO ROOM TEMP.(IT IS THE OLE SOUTH WAY) NO WE DONT DECORATE CAKES WITH THE SCRIPT ICING AS IT WILL ALTER THE TASTE OF THIS GLORIOUS CARAMEL. WE DECORATE THE PACKAGE WHICH WILL RESEMBLE A FLORAL DELIVERY. BTW.WE ARE NOT ZONED TO BAKE AND SELL FROM OUR HOME AND HAVE ACCESS TO A COMMERCIAL KITCHEN. WE BAKED 300 FOR CHRISTMAS SO NEEDLESS TO SAY WE HAVE TO HAVE LARGER QUARTERS. WE DONT USE COMMERCIAL INGREDIENTS AS POWDERED MILK,, POWDERED EGGS. ALL ARE FRESH MADE INDIVIDUALLY WITH REAL BUTTER, FRESH EGGS AND FRESH MILK AND OTHER DAIRY. ALSO NOT PRESERVATIVES. THIS IS AN OLD FAMILY RECIPE SO WE KEEP THE HOMEMADE FLAIR TO IT AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE NOT PERFECTLY STRAIGHT CAKE IN THE PICTURE. THE LOOK GIVES IT CHARACTER. IT HAS A VERY CREAMY TEXTURE....MELT IN THE MOUTH TYPE. WE HOPE YOU DECIDE TO TRY ONE. WE HAVE NEVER HAD A CAKE TO LOSE A CRUMB IN SHIPPING. HOPE THIS HELPS. REGARDS MELBA ANN

Kind of odd if you ask me?!?

There are mudcakes made with whiskey that will keep up to 6 weeks if covered properly in fondant. NO buttercream of course.

You know if paid for a cake and it was sitting right infront of you, you would HAVE to try it. That's my lack of self-control, so can't order one...who knows what's really in it and who made it?????

I dont get the difference, between buying off someone on ebay and buying from a home baker. If you've never met the person before, what's the difference. The whole shipping thing is very very dodgy, I can't imagine many cakes surviving that though.

LOL! I thought about that too. The more I look at the cut insides of that 3 layer cake and think about that caramel icing made in a cast iron skillet, the more I think I would actually take a bite of it.

Of course, my weakness could be from the sugar deprivation that I'm suffering. Damn you, thunder thighs!!

Boonanti, i was thinking the same thing ,but at the very least most home bakers have some reference you can go to like other people and you can at least see the cake right whne its done, instead of having to wait for it to ship.

Hahahaha! Ya'll crack me up. icon_biggrin.gif

So, Ferret are you going to do it? Let us know!

I sometimes sell and buy on EBay as well, and for her to say that it does not lose a crumb while shipping, it MIGHT just be true. Because, feedback is where you get it, if the buyer is not happy. Most of ya'll know that FEEDBACK can make or break you. I don't see how I can trust anyone either who is selling an actual home-made cake on Ebay. Now I can see someone selling a cake if it's a local delivery or pick up. But that still is scary! icon_surprised.gif

I've actually had a couple of customers buy wedding cakes off me without ever having met me. They did the whole thing over the net, paid and i delievered their cake and never saw their face. What's so scary about that?? It's unusual, but that's about it.

Hmmm maybe the difference between buying a cake off of Ebay and buying one from the Website of a Cake Designer might be synonymous with shopping at K-Mart vs. some famous Designer. Dang it! I can't get what I am trying to say to sound right. Do y'all get what I am trying to say? Not trying to put anyone down but trying to figure out why (even myself) would feel comfortable buying a cake from a designer's website vs buying a cake from a person on Ebay. I'll stop now before I confuse myself even more.

(thinking the best way I can say this icon_rolleyes.gif ) Okay, I'm not the only one saying it's scary, so why quote me in general? I'm merely stating an opinion.

I'm just saying I could not do it. But that's just me! I have to know the person or know of someone who knows the baker. You know by word. I'm not saying because I don't know the baker that they don't bake great cakes, I'm just saying I can't do it. And if someone orders cakes over the internet without knowing the baker (such as Ebay)-hey more power to them. It is different buying a cake from Ebay and buying a cake from a website. I guess I had too much un-honest people sell to me on Ebay.

Now, I would say, that I would buy cakes from alot of ya'll forum bakers here at Cake Central. Due to the mere fact that they post pictures and chat in forums like now and especially the ones that post their help alot. I would trust those bakers!

And at Ebay, I have dealt with alot of scammers there, even if they do have okay feedback (I have about 640 feedback so I know how it is there). And I would definitely not buy a cake from there. I'd rather buy a cake from Wal-Mart. LOL!

But, like I said that's merely my opinion! thumbs_up.gif

Sorry ttowndiva
I didnt mean it to sound like a personal attack. To tell you the truth, i wouldnt buy a cake from anyone, wether it'd be a bakery, eBay or a homebaker, but that's because i dont believe in paying for something i can do myself, I even like to make my own birthday cake, this year i was lucky enough to have a friend make it for me : ).

The reason for my questioning that I found this post curious, since when we buy any type of food, the whole transaction is one of pure trust. We dont know what goes on in the kitchens of our favourite restaurants, bakeries, etc. We may be regulars and trust a certain place, but with anything, you can never be 100% sure that everything is being done above board.
So if anyone can buy a hot dog from a cart in the street, why not a cake of eBay???
Nati (not being argumentative, just curious and amused)

here i go quoting again icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
I actually met the friend that made that cake for me in a cake decorating class a couple of years ago. I have since made another friend on this site, that lives near by.
This website is a great place for information, i was able to do a topsy turvy cake because of instructions i've found here, plus i've managed to meet so many lovely people from all over the world.
I did my first Wilton course about 13 years ago, i spent about 11 or so years making one cake a year, it was always a character cake, from a Wilton tin as i didint know anything else at the time, but then a couple of years ago i decided i wanted to learn how to make flowers, and it all grew from there. I am going to be doing the Wilton course again so that I can also take the advanced, there are so many things in buttercream that i'd love to learn, and im terrible at learning from books, i need someone to show me (well most of the time anyway).
ok im blabbering now.
Im sure you will be able to do awesome and eyecatching cakes in no time at all, all it takes is the willingless to learn and the commitment to stick to it and practice. All the best

All of my business is derived strictly through word of mouth. The person ordering from me had to hear of me from a friend, relative, or colleague who has ordered cakes from me before, so I'm not a total stranger to my clients. eBay sellers are total strangers. Besides their feedback, I have no references in order to trust their product. Since bakeries and restaurants all have strict health codes to which they must adhere, I am comfortable eating in such establishments even though those preparing the food are strangers (and I know, there are some seriously nasty habits that occur in restaurant and bakery kitchens even though they are supposed to follow health code regulations).

icon_smile.gif That make sense? I doubt eBay cakes are laced with arsenic, but they still could let their cats roam on their kitchen counters or other nasty practices that wouldn't necessarily kill me but would gross me out.

I don't eat at potluck dinners, either. Yuck! LOL

I'm freaky I guess. icon_biggrin.gif

I saw that seller's cakes and listings a little over a month ago and was kind of surprised myself. I got to looking around on ebay and there's lots of baked goods that are sold there....from standard companies like High Cotton (which is famous for their flavored pound cakes that come in fancy fabric covered hat boxes) to tons of home bakers. BTW - There actually IS a member here who sells baked goods on ebay...I don't think they sell cakes, but they do sell cookies and other yummies. icon_wink.gif

The funny thing about the caramel cake lady is that her cake looks EXACTLY like my grandmother's caramel cake!! THe outside, the inside, all of it....lol. I would bet that it probably tastes just as good too! lol The icing has the same sheen to it that my grandmother's does, and she has always made her caramel in a cast iron skillet as well....she taught me how to. And whoever it was (ttowndiva?) that said the proof is in the feedback on ebay is right! People can be downright rude & ruthless if they're not satisfied or if there's the slightest thing different than what they expected with their product when it's received. If the seller didn't have an 'about me' page that gave some insight to their history, practices, standards in their kitchen, etc.; or had a very low feedback rating, I would probably question it. But if their willing to share some insight about how they make to goods they sell, and even post their address and phone #, as in this 'Melba's' case...then I would think it's probably legit.

I agree that selling food on ebay is a little strange...can't say for sure that I would buy it. But if someone had died from it, I'm sure the world would know about it! lol icon_razz.gif You could always send a message to one of their buyers asking how the cake tasted, was it dried out, did it arrive "without a crumb fallen"?? etc. Other bakeries sell goods online and ship as well...even cakes. So I don't see why it's so shocking that it's done on ebay...a little strange, yes...but only because ebay is known for the sale of other tangible items and not so much food. I say...if you can - do! As ebay has proven - people will buy ANYTHING online! lol icon_lol.gificon_razz.gif
