I was searching for the business name of a local caterer in town with whom I want to get in touch, and stumbled upon a "Superpages" website that lists all kinds of cakes that people are selling on eBay. This is news to me! LOL

I would never buy cake off of the Internet from a home baker (haha, even though I AM a home baker), but apparently, from reading the feedback of at least one seller (eBay user ID hudsonsdumplin), people do....and they get shipped all over the place, unfrozen.

Freaky!! Would YOU buy a cake from eBay?

By the way, check out that chick's cakes....(click)...she sells that caramel cake for 30 bucks! icon_confused.gif

I've seen all kinds of things on ebay, so it doesn't surprise me! But, I wouldn't buy one either.

There is NO WAY I would ever buy a cake off of Ebay! You have no idea what kind of people they are or what might be going in to that cake!

I wouldn't even think to look on e-bay if I wanted a cake. But then my mom calls it "The Every Thing You Ever Wanted Store"
I sure wouldn't buy one from there.

There are a few people selling fake cakes there too. I'd even worry about those. Seems to me it would be hard to ship without damaging, also most of them don't look all that great.

Heey...I bought meat off the back of a truck one time...It wasn't THAT bad...

I would love to know how they ship decorated cakes without a mess!

Yeah, I want to know too, but my eBay username is cakepro, so I couldn't exactly send her a question asking specifically how she ships iced, unfrozen cakes Priority Mail. LOL

I bought strawberries from a roadside farmer once, but definitely no meat. icon_biggrin.gif Lots of people around here sell tamales from door to door, and out of their car trunks, and off of little "roach coach" bicycles...it's so freaking bizarre how people buy stuff to eat from complete strangers. I don't think I could even if I was starving. icon_confused.gif

I wonder about the regulations & etc. Do they face the same ones that we all do for a home business? Wouldn't want to be them if the health inspector got involved. Don't you have to go by the county/area that you are shipping the cake to for their regulations?

I just sent the seller a question about how she sends these because I'm really curious to know how you get a cake to someone in tact without it being frozen. I'll post with the answer if she sends me one back.

One thing I noticed while looking at her feedback was that it was from most of the same people. Yes, a lot were sellers, but a lot of the customer comments were the same people over & over. Makes you wonder if she is getting family & friends to do all the "buying." Just a thought.

Man, I hate that caps lock key.

Can you ask Melba Ann how the icing doesn't get smashed all into the box, or is the cake itself wrapped in plastic wrap or something?

I can't believe that unfrozen, iced cakes arrive with "never a crumb to fall" after being driven cross-country in the back of an 18-wheeler and in un-air conditioned postal trucks in the neighborhood. Not to mention the conveyor belts and postal employees tossing packages around....it just seems strange to me.

i had a customer buy cookies and ship to her husband who is in the military for his birthday the cookies got there fine but his mom shipped him a cake she made him and he said it was a disaster!!! The cake was stuck to the top of the box and busted up into pieces.
I am curious if she uses a tin for packaging. I have seen shows on food network when they ship like pound cakes in a tin inside abox.

I have people request me to ship cakes and I usually look at them like they have ask to make it on the moon because I am in no way interested in giving that a try.

Cakepro: I tried to ask her specific answers about her packaging, but that is the response that I got. It didn't really answer my question, but I'm not about to buy a cake to find out icon_surprised.gificon_lol.gif I guess the thing that really got me was the 9-10 day shelf life...I'm not sure you should ever eat a cake after that long.

I'll dissect it like a bizarre specimen and post pics of everything. LOL

I find that the description of their sugars and how it preserves the cakes for that many days a little disturbing..........
