I am making a shower cake and it will have bumble bees on it. I found this cake and would like to make the bees. I'll be using gumpaste, but what are the wings made out of? Are they that rice paper stuff, or whatever it is? How do you use it, where do you get it?

TIA,
Suz

Is there a photo or link to the photo of the cake you are talking about? That would help determine what they are made out of.

The wings look like gelatin sheets to me. You can get them at pastry supply stores or you can make your own, although I've never made them myself before.

wow. That's way cool! I'm guessing the bees are fondant since there is fondant on the bottom of the cake. The wings actually look like they are translucent. Have you tried PM'ing the person who posted the photo? Or is it from this site?

I found a picture of what gelatin sheets look like on the 'net so you can see them: http://www.bonniestern.com/store/index.cfm?PC=17&PL=3&PID=112

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated in any way with this store nor have I ever shopped there, I just wanted to show a picture of gelatin sheets as they come when you purchase them.

That being said, the sheets that I bought at my cake supply store are smallish, about 2x4 inches or so, and are fairly stiff and can be cut with scissors. Nicholas Lodge uses them in his gumpaste bugs classes/videos.

Try using sliced almonds paint them with black food color. I'v used almonds on bees that were on a cake. just be careful they are fragile.

I use white fondant for my bee wings, just roll it out and then cut with either a small frangipani single petal cutter or personally my fav is the small rose single petal cutter. Then I use a dab of royal icing to glue them onto the fondant bee's back. They will not stick up like your picture, unless you used flowerpaste and dried them first, but I like the droopy look ones. icon_biggrin.gif

I want to know about the wire. What kind is that and is it really safe to stick into the cake?

It's florist wire, I'm assuming from books I have showing this type of design and it say's to use "florist wire." I'm trying it on a cake I have due this weekend.

golfgirl1227,
Whose cake is this anyway. Maybe we should give them credit for creating it.........

I guess I should have mentioned that I have no clue about whose pic it is. I got it emailed to me because of the bees. I really like the transluscent wings and would love to try the gelatin sheets because I've never used it and love doing something different. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks so much for the ideas!

I've seen one similar in the galleries here. That's why I had mentioned PM'ing the person who made it to possibly ask them for directions. It's definitely a cool design. I may have to try it some day, but, right now, I'm up to my eyeballs in other cakes icon_smile.gif

You can use rice paper for the wings also and it works well
