I am just starting to do stacked cakes and have what may be a stupid question. I've tried the dowels and those plastic tubes but can't seem to be able to cut them. I tried a kitchen knife, scissors and even a utility knife. No matter what I try, they never come out even or flat! There has got to be an easier way than what I'm doing. Thanks in advance for any help!

Its time to take a trip to your local hardware store 
What you need are some heavy duty cutting shears. I took a peice of dowel with me to the store, and grabbed someone that worked there, and said, "I need something to cut this with, and it needs to fit in my kitchen drawer"
He took me to the "wire cutters" isle, and I ended up choosing a Black & Decker pair, and it works perfectly and I think it only cost about $18

This is what I do for dowelling cakes: I use plastic straws (I prefer the kind that McDonald's restaurant use). I just push the cake separator the size of the cake to be tiered into the already iced cake. At the marks left by the separator you insert a plastic straw, then pull it out a little (1/4 of an inch) and cut it , use the remaining straw to push the inserted piece. Repeat the procedure. If the cake is to be transported already stacked, then I hammer a wooden dowel through the middle of all the cakes. HTHjavascript:emoticon('')
