Please Don't Laugh... Need Help With This Cake!
Decorating By wendysue Updated 16 Mar 2006 , 6:19am by pinknlee
It's almost done, but I'd like some advice and any help you all can offer. The tires look bad, but they didn't look right as full circles... so I cut them at the base. Can someone tell me overall what I can do to make this cake really look good?
Sorry if the photos are huge, not sure how to resize them here.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer and please don't worry about hurting my feelings!
I know the side windows are too small, but don't have time to resize. Also realize I don't have the overall shape of the car quite right.
Hmm...I dont know what to tell ya, but I'll give ya a BUMP and maybe someone else can help.
Good Luck!!
Hey if you go to galleries and click last uploads.. scroll down and you can see someone has a mustang on there.. Check out the rims.. maybe you can do something like theirs but in buttercream.
Looks really good to me. You know we, ourselves, are always the hardest to please.

I think your cake looks pretty darned cool. I agree with briansbaker...I think adding some whitewalls would make it look awesome!
Definately something to outline the tires and not have them blend in with the car-other than that it is a really great cake! You did an excellent job! Love the windows!!!!
I showed the pic of your cake to my hubby and the first thing he said was "It needs more stickers and stuff. I searched a bit online and I found a great pic of Dale Earnheart's car. I copied the address.

Hope this helps. All in all, I think your car looks beautiful.......
I agree fully with evryone it looks pretty good to me and if it is for a 3 year old well he will be over the moon I would put silver or white around the tyres and I would also pipe around the car in a thin black line for the doors because it looks flat well it looks fine but this would make it complete, other than that nothing to worry about.
Thanks everyone for the help. Still working on this. It's actually for a 63 year old, but I still think he'll like it. I thought about the stickers, but not sure how to do it without just making a huge mess on the sides of the cake. I think I do need to outline the doors. Still thinking about how to do that. Thanks so much Donna for the link to the pictures. I have a few, but not this large... this will help. I'll post another picture in a minute so you can all tell me how I'm doing.
I think it looks great, I do agree with the comment made by the husbad, some decal stickers would definantly brighten it up a lt, but other than that you did a wonderful job, keep up the great work!
You did a perfect job on it to me! It looks like a pros cake. I think the more you mess with it the more it will just be a pain and you might end up messing it up. That's the way I think! LOL.
Thanks for the "don't over decorate" advice. My husband always yells at me because I'll keep picking at a cake until I do mess it up. So, here are a couple new photos and I think I'm going to step away from the cake now. It does look better in person. I added some color around the base and changed the tires. I'm not sure I want to do anything else at this point. Added some buttercream to the 3 on the roof of the car too. My color flow 3 was bleeding, so covered it up a bit.

Take a look on google IMAGES for Dale Earnhardt's car. You will get a few pictures of what his # 3 car looks like.
If you want or have time to, you can add his major sponsor to your car. I believe that was goodwrench service. You can add some of the protective netting they have on the windows instead of glass.
Here is a good image of the side of his car that i just found

Here is an image of the front of the car.

If you are going to add more stuff to make the cake more authentic I would suggest going with the bigger sponsors instead of the tiny decals.
Anyone have any ideas for how I could have added a spoiler to the back of the car? I'd though about doing one in color flow, but considering how fragile that is, don't really think it would have worked. I'm done with this cake, delivered it tonight, but just for future reference wonder what would have worked. Any ideas?
Thanks Cake Princess for the links. I looked at many photos under Google Images. I'm not good with fine details, at least not when working with fondant and buttercream. Would have liked to add some stickers like Dale had on his car and some of the other distinguishable marks like Goodwrench, but honestly I was afraid I'd mess up and ruin the cake! Isn't that horrible? I'm such a chicken.
Great job. I run a snack bar at a small dirt track here and make alot of race car cakes. I use Oreo cookies for the tires. I hate the taste of the black. You can also cut graham crackers for the spoilers and just ice them.
Your cake is great. Go to www.racecakes.com. They sell the kits for all of the NASCAR drivers. You can see all of the stickers on there. I just draw them in icing.
I want you to know that your cake is the first cake I have seen that brought tears to my eyes. You did a wonderful job and if the customer is an Earnhardt fan, he won't care about sponsors, decals, etc. Anything with that black number 3 will please him. But you did a great job!
Great idea to use a graham cracker, hadn't thought of that. I'm a little worried about the black icing's taste, but didn't know how to get around it. I actually tried using the Wilton black color spray on my white icing, but it just ran off. Didn't work at all. So, went ahead and made black frosting. Underneath the black frosting is strawberry. Might call and let my friend know that the black frosting isn't a reflexion of my frosting making skills!
I did look at Race Cakes, but everyone was either out of Dale Earnhardt, not selling his car anymore, or would have taken way to long to reach me. Also his # is the most expensive. Once you added shipping it was just toooo expensive to justify doing. I emailed a couple online stores and asked about just buying the decals and one emailed me back saying they weren't going to carry Dale Earnhardt (Sr.) any longer, the other I never heard from.
Anyway, would have been nice if that had worked.

Thank you Kellie, that really means a lot to me! I feel so much better about the job I did. When I make a cake I want it to be perfect and it never is, so then I end up beating myself up over it. I look at it and see the tires are too small, side windows too, and wish I could have added a spoiler, but I'll stop fretting over it! This guy is apparantly a huge fan. His sister purchased a stien that has the same blue background as my cake board. I think he'll be a happy guy come Saturday!
Thanks again, you really made my evening!
