A friend on mine owns her own shop and she showed me some things and then I did attend a Wilton class she gave.
So far I am all self taught.. The closest wilton classes are at least 30 minutes from here and I haven't had the time. I have looked at books in the stores and gone home and just try my butt off.
I learned a little bit from my mom... then self taught... then Wilton classes... then CC came along and blew it all wide open! I know ten times as much now that I hang out here!
Other - My mom first showed me when I was a kid (10 or 11) and then didn't really start till I was 25 or so. Then at 30 started taking the classes at Michaels!

What constitutes "self-taught". So many times I see this yet they've taken Wilton lessons? Are they saying that, yes they did take lessons but they didn't really learn most of what they do at the lessons?
I learned the basics by watching a lady make sugar eggs on tv then I decided that I wanted to try cake decorating so I took an ROP class near home at a Culinary school. I really enjoyed it.
Started out doing a couple of cakes on my own (haven't posted those pictures in my gallery ). Then I took Wilton I-III. But I have to give the most credit for what I have learned and how I have improved to Cake Central! I wouldn't have attempted half of what I have tried if I hadn't stumbled accross this sight. Thank you CC'ers!
I did take Wilton 1, but still consider myself to be self/cc taught. I learned a couple things in class, but don't use those methods much anymore. Cookies are my favorite thing to decorate, and I got all my knowledge and recipes for cookies from members of this site. Thanks guys!
I am self taught. The nearest class is 40+ miles away. I do alot of reading and practicing.
I always watched my mom make character cakes from shaped pans as a kid and she taught me to make the stars. And now that i'm older I got into making baked goods for other people and made a little bit of money...like $300 dollars between Thanksgiving and Christmas just cooking for people I know. I've always loved cake so I took a class offered from our local community college and VIOLA! Here I am! It's something that is therapeutic for me, I hope to start selling some cakes soon! You know, to support my "habit"! I look forward to learning lots from everyone here!
Mine is a combination of self teaching from CC of course, working in a bakery and taking the Wilton Classes. K'ly
I am just self taught,, through looking and reading on CakeCentral,, thank you all.. and watching some videos when I find them,,, haven't taken any classes yet, but would love too.
I am self taught. However, I didn't even know about a lot of things until I found CC. Thanks for all of your who have helped me grow and continue to help me!
I have taken a couple classes at my local JoAnn Store, and I have enjoyed every bit of it. I would like to go to the Wilton School in IL sometime down the line. I think I have finally found my calling, I have only done a few cakes right now.
My Mum took me as a teenager to have lessons with an old friend. She was in her eighties and was a lovely lady, but I often just watched as she would show me how to do something and go on to do it all herself! Anyway, I wouldn't be decorating now if it wasn't for her. She passed all her tools onto me before she passed away!
I'm self-taught. I started out making my kids' birthday cakes and just in the last year, have realized that I really have a nack for it and have learned TONS!!!! here on cc!!!!!!!!!
I decorated my first cake in high school. I had to make a "representation" of Grendl from Beowulf for English Literature. We were allowed to draw, sculpt, etc. I couldn't do any of those, so I made a 3D representation out of cake. (I guess I have always been obsessed with sweets!) Anyway, from then on I did most of the family birthday cakes and then when I got married and had kids had to become more creative with them. So, I decided recently (in my thirties...) to take the Wilton courses at my local Hobby store.
My mom started teaching me at a young age just out of curiosity, and wanting to help. So, I had the basic skills needed to make a variety of cakes. I decided recently to take the Wilton courses to get some more advanced techniques, so I skipped the first course, and started with level 2. I'm currently working on fondant now (on my own). I watch too much foodnetwork, so I have basic fondant skills hahaha. I really would like to take some gumpaste floral courses. CC has been a huge help in finding recipes, techniques, and inspiration from other members. I think I am officially a CC addict. I check this site more than my email now!!!
