Can you use a chocolate buttercream for the outline instead of black?

I don't see why not.

I think the main thing is to just have an outline so you can fill in.

I guess it really depends on your design. Would brown outlining look ok? If so, go with it.

If not, it is really not hard to make a bit of black for the outlining. I start with chocolate and add a bit of black coloring.
