Can someone PLEASE tell me how they make an hourglass shaped cake? Is it just one cake and then carved or are there cakeboard in there for support?

TIA

I would think it would be a combination of both........... bowl cakes and round cakes stacked to kind of get the basic shape and then carved to what you want. Not sure but would like to see what others have to say about it too.... theres one person who is really good on here that even draws diagrams to show the support structure......

I would bake 3 cakes...two that were either 7 or 8 inches, and one that was either 5 or 6 inches. I would stack them wit hthe smallest cakes in the middle so it looks like it was a small waist or has been cinched in the middle.

Actually, the middle part would have to be more cakes than just 1. Three maybe? I like Doug's idea too!

how's about this.

round tier at bottom on cake board.

wondermold, point up, on cakeboard w/ dowels under to support.

2nd wondermold, point down.

round tier at top on a cake board (between it and wonder mold)--the dowels to support it are out in the open and form the handles of the hourglass....these could be big dowels, section of thin pvc pipe or even copper tubing.

of course one dowel down through whole thing to keep it all, esp. that upside down wondermold, all in place.

now....if don't want 3-d

then one round tier and one wondermold cut in half and placed on cake board.

Wonder molds work, I did it but mine went a bit crooked on the top, my uneven trimming... other than that it was way cool! Sorry, no pics because I was so mad it was crooked!

If you don't have a wondermold pan, you can use pyrex bowels.
