Does anyone have a list of the flowers that are cake-safe and the ones that are not?

Cheers,
Darci

I know ivy is poisonous too.
I'm sure someone will post a list shortly...

Also, I would like to know what application technique everyone uses for their fresh flowers on the cake. Some really look like they're just stuck into the sides.

I have some clear separator plates that I use 4" posts with. This creates a cavity between the layers where I stick fresh flowers and greenery. If I put something in the place of a topper...I use a gumpaste plaque as a base to keep the fresh greens from contacting the icing. Of course, I'm not THAT anal about it....sometimes a fern branch will touch the cake. Look in my gallery at the 50th wedding cake. This is the set-up I'm describing.

I have lists on my sites too. See links below. If anyone has suggestions on how I could make my lists better or more user friendly, let me know.

I was looking over the "flowersnot" list and they have Calla Lilies as poisonious! I never would have thought that! Aren't they used on cakes alot? I'm sure I've seen some that weren't gumpaste or silk! I'll have to remember that!

Hehehehe..."nose"gays.

Heather, maybe they are poisonous in large quantities? I bet if it comes in contact with cake and you eat it you'd still be ok. I bet you just can't sit down and eat a whole flower. Yuck! I've seen hydrangeas on cakes too that are real and those are poisonous. I'm some are more poisoinous than others too. Who knows? Thankfully I haven't had any flower requests!

A wedding cake I did had hydrangeas on it and they were just laying on the cake. I know nothing about flowers, that's why I am a cake decorator not a florist. The florist is the one that took care of putting the flowers on the cake. He is a very popular florist around here so I assumed he knew what he was doing. The cake server knew to remove the flowers before cutting, which she did, and none of us who ate the cake got sick, so I guess that was ok!

I'm hoping that my sugar paste abilities will be honed enough to use hand-made flowers but in the eventuality that they are not...I want to make sure I don't kill anybody with the cake decorations.

My first wedding cake is for May 20. I hope I have time!

Cheers,
Darci

You might be surprised how many florists don't care or know about flower safety and wedding cakes. I actually have tasted a chemical from a flower on a cake and at first thought there was something wrong with the frosting itself. I'd hate for someone to eat my cake and think I made such horrible tasting frosting! Later I realized what it was, that is much later after I started researching the ins and outs of wedding cakes. Anyway, best to be careful. You have to consider your business too. icon_wink.gif
