Can I pick a heating core up at a store without having to order one online? I usually get my pans at Michaels but hadn't noticed heating cores there, anyone know what store sells them?

Don't know, I just use an upside down flower nail. I figure why waist the money when this seems to work fine?

Thanks, I'll check around at another branch! I've used the flower nail before, I wasn't sure if the heating core was thicker and maybe worked better or not. I need to pick up a couple extra flower nails anyway, mine aren't looking so good underneath around the nail part, wouldn't want to put those back in the batter lol. Then I'll aways have those for back up if I can't find the heating core icon_smile.gif

The heating core is just a little cone shaped cup, sort of like a mini cake pan you place in the middle of the cake, then fill it with batter. When the cake is done, remove the circle and the ring of cake and replace it in the hole.

I have used both, and find the nail is quicker, is often use two just because. The cake is less like to tear when you remove the nail.

If you use parchment, put the nail UNDER and through the parchment. As long as it is clean, the stained nails still work fine. They are also really cheap to replace.

Thank you JoAnnB, that's a great suggestion, with the parchment paper, I'll remember that! I didn't realize the heating core could tear the cake, sounds like it's a little more then I want to try to deal with, I'll just stick to the flower nail!
