I'm planning to make a 3D lamb cake for Easter, and I've never transported a 3D cake. What type of cake board and box is best for transporting this type of cake? (I'll be making a practice cake before Easter, so I'll be able to try transporting it before I finish the "real" cake.)

BTW, I'm planning to make the 3D Christmas tree cake in December (the pan is discontinued, but I'm sure someone here is familiar with it), so if you have any suggestions for transporting that cake, I'd be interested in hearing those, too.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Sara and Welcome!

Use the most stable board you can find, you don't want any 'bendability' in it. I have not made the lamb however I have made a few horses using the lamb pan. I always use bamboo skewers, one through the head, one througn the middle section and one through the butt end. You put them directly through the cake and into the cake board thereby anchoring it. Cute tehm after they are in with shears or scissors, just press lightly so you push teh cake down a little bit and then snip. This way the skewer will be just below the 'crust' fo the cake, then decorate it. Also, put some buttercream under the cake itself to help it adhere to the board.

Hope this helps!

Hi Sara,
Mind if I tag along on your post? I too am relatively new (class 2 of Course 3) and I too will be making the 3D lamb for Easter for our church brunch. (Ha! I volunteered!) I am using the 13 1/2" oval for a base and putting the lamb on top of that. I have been making Royal Icing pansies in pastel pink, yellow, lavendar and purple and I made some leaves last night, I will put those all around the base of the lamb after I ice him. I took out my lamb pan this past weekend and just used an all crisco buttercream and practiced piping the swirls on the mold (don't have to waste a cake that way). I too would like to know if I should dowel him to the oval cake base or if I should make a cardboard cakeboard for him to sit on before I put in on the oval cake base.

Thanks Sara for asking the question, I will be waiting to see what kind of answers we get.

Best,

Me again!

Anytime you have a 3-D cake, using something to stabilize it is always a good idea. Samsgranny, I would follow the same procedure I described previously, driving the dowels or skewers through the lamb, through the base cake, into the board. Better to be safe then sorry with all that hard work!
