I have always just let my mmf stuff just air dry for a few days to get hard, but I have heard that you can add gum tex or denture powder to make it harden quicker. I have a few questions...

1) How much gum tex or denture powder do you add?

2) When do you add it? While mixing mmf, or just kneed it into the dough?

3) Does it change the taste or texture?

4) How fast does it harden? Would overnight be long enough?

5) Can you use this trick with rolled butter cream and candy clay?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for all your help! icon_smile.gif

1. How much you add varies per size. Wilton says you add 1 teaspoon gumtex to 12 oz. Usually I don't measure. I dump some on, or of I am working with a small amout I will just take that piece of fondant and press it against the gum-tex to pick up some.

2. I just add it as I am about to use that piece or color.

3. It may change the texture a little. Makes it feel a little thicker, I guess is the word I would use for it. I don't worry about the taste as the pieces I make aren't usually eaten.

4. I've done bow loops with (wilton premade) fondant + gumtex and had them dry over night, though I prefer to let them sit longer. I've also used it to make little turkey figures. How long it takes to dry depends on the size of your piece.

5. I don't think it would work for either of those. I think rolled buttercream is just a thicker buttercream and not the same texture as fondant. Candy clay hardens on its own pretty well. From the little bit I have done with it it holds it shape while drying pretty well.

Adding gum tex to fondant makes it a cross between fondant and gumpaste. It gives you more time to work with it, but dries harder and faster than just plain fondant.

Yeah, what Texas said icon_smile.gif

I basically just took a pink of gum paste with each color of MMF that I was making. I did all my ducks that way and they dried really well. I'll never go back to plain MMF.
