I use a real thin board that I get at Home Depot for $1.66 and cut it to the size I need.
If there is a lumber store around you, ask about the scrap pieces of board. At our local shop I can get them for free!

Yeah, it sounds like there is not enough support. I use a lot of cake boards (for a half sheet cake like 4-5) and that helps. I know someone that had cake baords cut from wood. She covers them and charges a deposit so she gets them back. She no longer has this problem!

A single board--like those made by Wilton or found in cake supply stores-is really never enough support for a real cake.

I use 3/16 (or thicker) foamcore for all of my cakes. For very large, heavy cakes, I put two or more thicknesses together with packing tape and then cover the whole thing with a decorative foil, contac paper, etc.

If I want the board returned, I tell the customer, put my phone number on the bottom of it ,and I don't add the cost of it into the final cake cost.

I get the foamcore on sale at Michael's--they usually put it on sale in the fall--for $1/sheet (20"x30"). I figure that for most cakes, I costs me less than $1 and I've never had a cake crack since using it.

In the absence of foamcore, I've used no less than 3 regular cake boards taped together and then covered.

I've ordered the masonite cake boards and used them. I used one on the 3 tier cake in my gallery and it was very heavy and I didn't have a single crack. You can do a google search for masonite cake boards and it will show where you can purchase them - I forget where I ordered them.

I know what you mean about cracking! Very frustrating! I had my husband make me some boards out of scraps that we had left over from some project. I would cover the boards themselves with contact paper, etc. then ask for the customer to get them back to me. I live in a very small town, and thought this wouldn't be a problem, but I've had soooo many customers complain about having to return them, that I've stopped using them! I even offered to pick them up! Now I just use regular card board bases, and while I'm transporting to customers I use my homeade plywood bases. I just give them the option to keep it and let them decide if they want their cakes to crack!
