Okay ya'll! I am finally going to ask, how is everyone making the turrets for their castles? I want them to be edible so I am assuming they are made out of sugar or gumpaste. I have a castle to make for my niece's first birthday!!!! I have never made one hence I'm coming to the experts here! Please share the secrets of all the beautiful castles here. They are all so gorgeous and I want to learn icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I made mine out of ice cream cones. The regular cones and the sugar cones. You can ice them with buttercream or cover them with fondant. Or coverwith BC and decorate with sugar crystals and/or vines and flowers. Just an idea.

My castle cake was my first 3D cake and I also wanted the whole cake to be edible. First I thougt about a tin but couldn´t find the right size so I finally used coffe mugs. I was afraid that they would crack because of the heat but it was ok. On top I used ice cream cones.
You can find a picture of my castle at my photos. It looks a bit bumpy because I used banana cream frosting under the MMF and this wasn´t a good idea.

I, too, wanted my entire castle cake edible. I used fondant with a little gumtex in it and laid it over a premade paper cone. Once dry, I added small circle fondant pieces on top of that. For the actual towers, I made the mistake of carving small circles and stacking them on top of each other. They kept leaning even though I used the durable cake mix recipe. Next time, I'll bake them in a tall can, like spaghetti sauce.

I did what dtmc did. This was way before I knew anything about decorating cakes and used store bought frosting...the castle cakes are in my gallery if you want to check them out.

I used 6 inch round cakes for my side towers and large cup cakes for the center tower. I did put a dowel rod through the cup cakes to keep it from tipping. Also used ice cream cone and put frosting over that for the central tower. Of course, my cake was rather large (10 cakes total).

I also used two cup cones, one inverted on the other for my castle turrents, then I cut the cut to slightly inset them.

Hope this helps !

Hiya

I make lots of castle cakes and I use pastillage icing..a very hard edible icing....or you can use gumpaste....

I get kitchen roll holders and cover them with cling film and then roll out my paste wrap round and leave to dry for 24hours ..then slide off your tower and you have a hollow tower.
I then get ice cream cones and wrap them with fondant then cover wit lustre powder and then I fill the towers with sweets and stick the cones on top..

There are pics in my albgum..hop that helps

I have to have it made for the birthday party on April 1st so it will be a little bit yet. Plus I am leaving for San Diego on Wednesday for the cake show the 25-26th and won't return until the 28th. I hope I have enough time to do everything..... icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

The last day of the show is the 26th and awards will be given out then plus there are demo and Kup Kake Korner!

That wouldn't be good ditching the kids with the hubby! There would be some serious payback involved!!!!!!! icon_razz.gificon_lol.gif

LOL Cakemommy. I've been leaving them w/him more than he'd like right now because it's Girl Scout cookie time and I have to get these booths set up for my girls and make sure they are run. today is the last one for us (hopefully). At least the sun is sort of out, so hopefully, the girls won't get rained on. We have a plethora of camping and overnight adventures set up for the next 8 weeks, so he's going to be having the little two a LOT in that time. I made sure they were all on weekends though so it wouldn't involve inturrupting his "regular" work schedule icon_smile.gif

I used paper towel rollers ... wraped them in wax paper, covered in MMF, let dry for a couple days then pulled the roller and wax paper out.

I also recently used some vanilla cookies (like oreos but the vanilla ones - not sure what they are called) I attached them with some buttercream until it was the right height then covered the whole thing in buttercream, let it crust and then used the paper towel method to smooth it out. I didn't take any pictures but it turned out good and the kids loved eating them.

Amy, Do a search for your local girl scout council and you can get them in the shop at the council. We store them in the freezer, so we generally have them till Thanksgiving.

I'll have to do that ShielaF thanks! I love putting the Thin Mints in the freezer anyway. They are the best eaten cold!!!!!!!

I have that Debbie Brown book. I'll take a look at her design. I have so many books that I forget that I've got directions for some of the things I want to do in them. OOOPS!!!!!

Good luck on your castle cake. I can't wait to see a picture of it!!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif
