You could shape the cake as a pregnant woman then get an edible image and put it on the belly area.

If you used the top idea then you could put on it.."A womb with a Veiw"

Or ypou could make a big pea pod with sonogram pics as the peas. and put on it "Our Little Sweet Pea...

You could also make a camera and then put the sono pics out like real pictures and put" Our First family Photo"???

You could just put the sono pic with a bunch of flowers and hearts around it and put" Two Hearts Beating As One"

Just some thoughts

Maybe you could do a side view of a pregnant woman and put either a buttercream transfer of a baby or a molded fondant baby and put it in the belly? If the customer is insistent on the sonogram being incorporated, she could have the picture put into a nice frame and it can be set to one side of the cake. If neither of you like the idea of the side view of the woman and baby in her belly, maybe you could just do the cake in baby colors with some fondant baby items such as booties, bottles, rattles, blocks, quilt, etc and leave a place for the sonogram picture (in a frame) to be set on top?

Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

Oh you poor thing! I have found ever since art school that some people "should not" try to be creative at all for any reason. I would pitch that friends idea out the window and gently tell her no. But before telling her no come up with a cool cake to do. Her cake is simply not a good idea. Some people can sing, some can paint, some can knit a sweater "bless my grandma's soul", but some people should stay away from anything visually creative - period!

Gosh, I have been thinking about this cake all through lunch time also. How could you possibly "cut" the cake if you used the Sonogram!!!!!! Ewwwwww. Not good.

Now, maybe I'm a little weird...but I'm having a hard time grasping why it's such a bad idea...

Although I agree that it's not for everyone, I think that some moms are so enchanted with the sonogram that to see it on the cake is kind of neat. Of course eating that part would be really weird icon_rolleyes.gif. I know how talented you are and I'm sure you could pull it off. The one question I would make sure I knew was... Since they are a friend of the pregnant lady, are they sure this is something the mom-to-be would really like, or does she just like it?

Let us know what you do.

I can see where this would trouble you, but if that's what the customer wants.... Isnt' that rule number one in business? "The customer is always right"? If you really don't want to do it, you can always politely decline, right?

Not to give this a warped twist, and if the customer insists on the sonogram and pregnant belly...whatever you do, do not allow the cake to be red velvet cake...it would be like performing a c-section during the baby shower when you go to cut the cake...mom-to-be might not appreciate it too much! Real bad idea! thumbsdown.gif Remember the armadilla in "Steele Magnolia's"? Oh dear...she would run screaming from the room, and being a mom that had a c-section, I couldn't imagine! Good luck, and post whatever the outcome turns out to be please. icon_smile.gif

Wow, silly me, never thought this was for a customer.....cuz she said a friend wanted her to do a cake. Dollar's never even crossed my mind. Sure can tell I am an amateur cake designer. Melscakes, I would still gently prod your friend to think about this cake carefully. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I can understand why they might think this would be cute. here's a couple of thoughts I had:

1) Decorate the top of the cake as a picture frame, with the sonogram pic in the frame.

2) I saw a very cute cake in one of the Wilton yearbooks, it was a teddy bear holding up an x-ray that showed its ribs and a big heart. You could do something similar with an x-ray screen over the tummy and do your own version of a sonogram. I'll see if I can find the pic in the yearbook again and let you know which one it's in.

I was thinking about that idea too, and think that would be really cute.

The more I think about it, I couldn't imagine that anyone would actually cut into the sonogram part. I think it would "cute of the cake" and that's about it. Hmmmm.....!!!!!

Okay, the little bear I was thinking about is on p.64 of the 1999 yearbook.
Another thought I just had- if you can do an edible image, you could do an 'icing image' like boween does by putting the image on fondant and letting it dry. That way, it could be taken off the cake before the cake is cut and saved for posterity.

I like the idea of doing it on fondant or a plaque of some kind that can be removed before cutting the cake! The picture frame would be perfect for that! Or even a "Dr. Teddy bear" holding up an x-ray!

Melscakes, what do you think?

Tiptop57, My friends are my biggest customers, so I assumed she would at least be paid for the supplies. I think tho', even if it's free, she should do what the person asked for -except in this case, I would make other suggestions.

Thanks for the responses!

OMG Charman, its funny and weird that you said what u said, because she wants a RED VELVET cake icon_eek.gif !!! I find it morbid to want a cake thats shaped like a tummy with a sonogram, and inside red!!

I tried to tell her, but she's not easily persuaded. She thinks folks wont care, they'll just want to eat the cake. I say thumbsdown.gif .

Im assuming the mother to be knows , because my friend gave me the sonogram pics, and laminated them in different shapes for me to choose.

Oh, and she is a paying customer, she became my friend after a few orders.

I love some of the ideas you guys gave me, the pea pod, the frame, etc. Im going to run some of those across to her, and see. I have to make the cake tomorrow (friday) night

Does the woman have children of her own, I wonder? I just cannot imagine someone thinking this is a good idea. I feel sorry for the mom-to-be who has to act appreciative of the "Humor" after all is said and done. I am hoping you're able to turn it around, Melscakes. If she really wants the tummy, then you really should do the plaque idea, so it can be removed before cutting. Or just used the laminated pic instead of an edible image, so they'll take it off anyway. Good Luck!!!

Oh my goodness, I can't see how this is funny. Ewwwwwwww it is so morbid, I really can't handle this in my head. Red Velvet Cake, Tummies, and Sonograms its The Donner Party Shower! Go with Imakecakes suggestion, remove the plaque!!!!!!!!!!! Oh Melscakes, please, please let us know how this turns out........

I have to laugh...when I said don't make it red velvet cake, I never dreamed you would reply back that that is what she wants...oh dear. As asked before, does this friend of the mom-to-be have kids?!? I agree with the comment above about the poor mom-to-be having to act gracious...I'm not sure I could do it. Please keep us posted on the outcome of this one!

How about doing a red velvet cake like she wants and then on the top doing a model of a pregnant lady and have the smallest one of the sonograms in her hand, have her smiling at it.

That way nobody is eating the pregnant tummy and you've complied with all her wishes.

Bearing the scars today of my c-section 11 years ago I don't think I could face the idea of someone cutting open a pregnant belly cake with visual effects. Does she want this for halloween or something???

What a great idea!!!! If insistent on the whole red velvet, pregnant woman and sonogram...I think that is the best idea yet! Still just shaking my head...do people even think now a days?!?

Man I am laughing over here, Im glad Im not alone in feeling that its morbid..LOL. She has 2 kids of her own! Unfortunately the sonogram pics she gave me are big, the smallest one fits an 8inch round, so Im not sure if I cant make it work with the idea that Sparklycake
suggested, because the cake is going to be 11X15

My gosh! The picture is big, to boot! No doubt with great detail of the baby! Can you go to Staples and have the pic reduced then cover it with contact paper? You should just show this whole darn thread to your friend, Melscakes!
