The reason WHY you don't move a very HOT, very MOIST cake!!! icon_cry.gificon_lol.gif I should have put it on a different rack but noooooooooo, lol. As you can see, there was not enough room and I DID not do a good job of transfering it. I blame it on this earache I've been suffering with since friday!!
icon_rolleyes.gif This is a cake for my mom's birthday tomorrow, thank goodness its not a paid cake! I am either going to patch it up with buttercream and crumbs, or cut a small round from it and put it on top of the second cake, or I will torte the other cake to give it height.

I'll post what I manage to do with it after these puppies have cooled!

bummer! Been there done that! I like the idea of cutting a small round! But your cakes are nice and tall, you could probably get away with torting one layer and filling. Make cakeballs out of teh other and serve them on teh side, or place them around teh cake as a border. Just an idea. Good luck.

Jamessweetie: You didn't have to break your cake apart just for me icon_lol.gif Hope I didn't send any bad cake luck your way....figures we would joke about it & it would happen. You can tell how moist that cake is just by looking at the picture...It looks soooooooo yummy!! It can definitely be saved though...keep us informed on how you fix it.

By the way, I think we should have a contest for messiest kitchen after baking a cake. I actually think this is a contest I could win thumbs_up.gif

I think I could give you a run for your money... my DH always jokes that it looks like a sugar bomb went off in our kitchen!

unfortunately the other cake has become a mess now, the sides are hard so I tried trimming them off, so now they are both just a mess. I may just have to toss it. Getting sick of throwing out cake icon_sad.gif This whole cake thing just may not be my thing afterall

Don't get discouraged!!! You've made some great cakes! So many times I've felt like that's it, I'm done, this isn't for me. But, then "back to the drawing board" I go. thumbs_up.gif I think you enjoy this too much to really believe this isn't for you. Try again, I'm sure you'll be happy with the results! icon_biggrin.gif

Jamessweetie: I think we all feel like you do somedays...sometimes I just want to give up on cakes all together & pursue a different profession.

I honestly know how you are feeling right now, but please don't give up.YOur cakes are so creative & you do such nice work. Once you find a way that works for you, you won't have to worry about throwing away cakes. Which by the way, if you don't want to make cake balls out of them, press the cake into the bottom of a springform pan & use it for the crust on cheesecake...works perfect.

Anyway, back to the topic...I will tell you what works best for me with cakes & they come out great all the time(except for Teddy icon_redface.gif )

I bake my regular cakes in springform pans, but any pan will work also. I spray the pan with Pilsbury (the kind w/flour in it), pour my batter in & bake at 325. When the cake is done I take it out, use a clean towel to press down on it. This levels it & makes it a little denser. Then I leave it in the pan for about 10-15 minutes. I immediately put a cake circle over it and flip it on to there. I let it cool for about 5-10 minutes more, wrap with plastic & stick in the freezer for about 45 minutes. If I have to carve any for a shape I do that while it is still frozen. Then I usually wait for it to unfreeze & ice it.

Sorry for this unbelievably long post, but I thought maybe it might help a little.

Thank you so much for the encouragement icon_biggrin.gif

I've had a bad earache since Friday (got checked on saturday by a walk-in clinic who said it was most likely just a virus but they weren't that helpful and it hasn't improved icon_mad.gif ) and insomnia before that for a week, and the week before that had a wisdom tooth pulled, so I think my patience is just about shot. I couldn't get a hold of my doc cuz their phone has been busy for some reason, and then I phoned dh to ask where my shortening was to make icing...and he said, "if it was on the table...umm,I may have thrown it out" icon_eek.gif It was a FULL thing of shortening! icon_cry.gif So after telling him that I was going to go to the store and buy a cake he ordered me to relax and he'll pick up the stuff I need tonight, maybe I'll be able to get him to make the icing, lol. icon_wink.gif

Thanks so much again, at least I have the pictures...after I have managed to make it look like a cake I'll probably be able to have a huge laugh about it, lol. thumbs_up.gif

Thank you for the compliment. As for the tip I used for the border I truly don't remember what number it is but I do know that it is one of the larger shell tips. Sorry I can't tell you more but I never plan my cakes. I just start and see what happens and what I end up with!!! LOL

JamesSweetie - don't throw it out!!! Even if you bake new ones keep those ones to make cake balls with!!! O5r maybe just make your mom cake balls instead of a birthday cake - you could arrange them to spell our MOM and put candles in a few of them....
And don't give up! Some days things just don't go well in the kitchen - especially if you're not feeling well. Just remember that as long as you enjoy it most of the time, it's worth doing.
I hope you feel better soon by the way!

Wow! Is that the same cake or did you bake a new one?! I absolutely love the decor! Pink and green look so feminine together! I love how you used the fondant to wrap the sides and left the top open. I also love that sweet border on the bottom! Great job! One could never tell that there was any sort of disaster happening with this cake!
