This weekend I am doing a 50th anniversary cake for my great-aunt and uncle. The topper we are using was on the cake of my great-grandparents 50th anniversary. Here's the problems, 1 it's old and 2 after they last used it the icing was not cleaned off very well. So my question is what should I do the keep the topper from touching the cake? I don't want it to touch any icing just because I don't want to ruin it any more. The base is some sort of ceramic and it looks like it has just sucked up the old icing. I know this sounds really gross...but it's not really that bad. Do you think wax paper under the topper would work?
wax paper would be fine.. Or make a base for it with a cardboard .. and just add a icing border around the cardboard.. or make cardboard to fit topper exactly (so that you dont see it).. good luck!!
Personally I would cover the bottom in melted wax to protect it. Then you can just stick it in the icing on the cake and not worry about it

Maybe you could cover cardboard in royal icing to mach the cake or topper? Lazy_susans idea sound s good, how would you do that?

You would have to melt some wax in a dish and dip the bottom of the topper in the melted wax.
