I saw the Food Network Cake Challenge today. And saw that they were painting on Fondant.

What are they using? How do I do it?

Thanks!

I've done tiny little things here and there and I just use a small brush and food coloring pastes.

People use different things, the most popular being lemon extract and vodka mixed with dusts.

I like using melted cocoa butter and color dusts.

So I mix my Wilton colors with Extracts or Alchohol?

How much of each?

You'd mix the dusts with alcohol. The straight paste or liquid colors can be used as is or you can mix with a tiny bit of piping gel.

or a really easy way is to buy edible food pens and just draw on the fondant.........really good if you want to do writing or something like that.....kinda hard painting the way you write........here are some cookies I did with the edible food pens......they work on royal icing, and anything halfway hard....I just simply used the gel colors on this treasure map (made of fondant)....and it was a lot more difficult to control than the pens.....but both did work!

Thanks Everyone!

I didn't realise that there was "dust" as well as Wilton colors. I'll have to go look for those!

And I've never seen such a great result from the pens, I'll have to pick those up too!

There goes the cake budget for this month!

I used to be an art teacher so I love to paint on anything, even cakes. I have done this quite a few times and I just use watered down gell colors...

Wilton's sparkle dusts aren't the same thing as what they are talking about above. The luster, petal or pearl dusts are alot finer than the Wilton Sparkle dust. You can find them online at cake supply websites.

As far as painting on fondant, I have done both dusts and color pastes (like Wilton colors). I mix both with alcohol (everclear, but you can use gin or vodka) as I have found that it helps the dry with out the color being sticky. You can also use extracts, I have heard lemon is the best since it has the highest alcohol content. The alcohols evaporate and leave the color behind.

just another note to add to texas sugars post,
The petal and pearl dusts are not water soluble so you would need to use the alcohol for it otherwise you end up with watery globs that don't look very attractive.

wow..........those cakes are amazing.....Thanks for the compliment lisams........oh and riagirl......you can also use the clear vanilla extract, so if you have any of that you don't have to run out and buy vodka!! (I always get stared at when I go to the liquor store at 8am on saturday .....which is when I make most of my cakes) they probably think I'm an alcohol.......and I always have my 3 kids in tow.....LOL They give me the worst looks........probably don't think I'm MUCH of an alcoholic though....most of the time I'm buying those little .99 cent bottles LOL you know like you get on an airplane.......I just throw them in my cake decorating caddy so I always have some.....and then I don't feel like Im blowing 20 bucks to use a teaspoon of vodka!!

i just use the wilton colors...but now that i think of it, maybe the dust and flavoring would be better.

I just used vegetable oil to mix in with my Wilton paste colors as well as lustre dust and I have to say this is my favorite now...it dries better (it doesn't leave a sticky feel like vodka has) and it's much smoother to "paint" with and blend colors with....
