Can someone please tell me what the criteria is for a mini cake.
The size etc. Are they only used for weddings???

I've never seen any criteria for a mini cake. i would say a tiered cake with the base being 6 inches or below would be a mini cake. Here are some links from aussie websites. They are used for any purpose, not only weddings. It's all up to the customer and how much they want to spend and how important the cake is to them.

I have to do four mini cakes for a demo for Michaels in April. Wilton wants the size to be four" three" & two" I bought a mini- tier cake pan at the ICES Convention in New Orleans in July. It has a 3'base,middle is 2',& top is 1'. You can make 6 tier cakes at once. I love it. This pan makes it so easy & quick to do . I
