I finally got my topsy turvy cake done for my daughter's 19th birthday. I had all the layers sculpted, filled and crumb coated last night, ready for icing and stacking today. When I woke up, the bottom tier had collapsed into itself. I think I had it too top heavy. I just burst out laughing, I couldn't believe it! I took a few hours break, and made another cake.

I worked on the rest most of the morning and into the afternoon. Stacking was a treat, I thought I was going to lose it all. Luckily my DH came home just as I was trying to catch the top two layers from collapsing. He hustled and cut and sharpened three dowels to spear through the entire cake. He saved it! LOL

Anyway, I seriously doubt I will make another one of these. It was alot of work and it drove me crazy for the last few days, wondering if I could pull it off. Let's hope it stays in one piece until her party tomorrow!

I've wanted to make a topsy turvy cake for a long time, but I can imagine how difficult and time consuming these cakes are.. HEYYY it's still standing...the colors are lovely, it's just a little more topsy than turvey. I like it! and I'm sure everyone else will too!!!!

That is great!! I like the more topsy than turvy look, definitely gets you to take a second look. Great colors too. Hope you don't have to move it far for the birthday.

I really like those colors!
You might try one like mine where I use the regular stacked method but still achieve a topsy turvy effect. No wells necessary.
These are fun cakes but I agree time-consuming too.

I have yet to make one. But when I do I will make it The way they do in The Whimsical bakehouse book. Using the filling to create the tilt instead of having to trim the cake and create wells.

But you cakes all look lovely ladies. Keep it up.
