A customer wants a golden Buddah on a cake. I thought I should make it with that "real gold" look. I don't know what product to buy for that. Also do I make the Buddah out of fondant, rolled buttercream, gumpaste? What? If you have done something similar, send me pics too!

I am thinking I would use gumpaste and fondant(maybe mix them together). I would probably paint it with some gold luster dust. I would do a google search of a buddah image to give you an idea of how to mold it.

If it is too difficult to sculpt...I might look into getting a small figurine to place on top of your cake. This is something you could probably order online if you have time.

Good luck. icon_smile.gif

Traci,
Thanks for the great images. Do you or does anyone know if luster dust can be purchased at AC Moore, Michael's, Craftmania, or Wal Mart? I've never used it before.

Michael's carries shimmer dust which is not the same. You will probably need to go to an actual cake supply store or order it online. I believe you can get it from sugarcraft.com.

Luster dust can be mixed with vodka or lemon extract and painted on gumpaste or fondant for a shiny finish. The one that I use is called Super Gold. icon_smile.gif

Shaddi,
Holy cow that website has interesting cakes! Thanks for it.

I did the Golden Buddah yesterday. I made a small 3D Buddah out of candy clay (the recipe is in the recipe section). I tinted it with ordinary yellow icing color as I couldn't find luster dust in a store. It came out cool.

The buddah cake on rosebud was amazing. Nothing like mine.

That's a great site! What a fun cake to be commissioned with! Have you ever worked with edible gold leaf? Would they be willing to pay for you to experiment with it? I need some customers like that.

How about starting with the standing bear pan, even the standing pooh, and carve and shape from there?

Tasty cakes: No, I have never worked with edible gold leaf. I didn't even know it existed! Have you?

The cake is already done and gone. I will ask how they liked the candy clay.

As far as charging. I didn't charge anything for the cake because the recipient was my son's karate instructor.

No I haven't worked with it yet, but I'm dying for a buddha to come my way to get a chance!

It's funny that is was for your son's Karate instructor - I do my daughter's karate instructors whole family's cakes!!! Hmmm, maybe they'd like a buddha!

I've got at least 35 karate cakes I've done on this web page if you want to look at them for ideas.

TheVienneaus, thanks for sharing those! They are awesome! I mostly make their family cakes, but I got them as customers when my daughter blabbed at her belt ceremony that "Mommy made me a cool cake with my new belt and my karate picture and we're going to go eat it now!" and her teacher jokingly said, "Make sure you save me a piece!" My daughter remembered and ordered me to save her teacher a piece. They liked it A LOT and my proud husband handed them cards and it's been great!

Tasty Cakes,

Does your karate school have birthday parties? Mine does. He supplies everything but the cake. He always recommends me; but not everybody uses me. He said whenever somebody brings in a store-bought cake, he refuses to eat it saying he's watching his weight or something. But when my cake comes in, he has at least two pieces.

They used to do parties, but now they are too busy with classes, tournaments, and both of their schools, and they work full time jobs during the day!

Check out http://www.sugarcraft.com/ Search for buddha under religious candy molds, they sell a 3-d chocolate mold of buddha. You can use it with fondant or gumpaste, then paint gold with luster dust.

Also this website has a 3-d silcone mold, used for candles (not sure if food safe though) http://www.onestopcandle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?page=OSC/PROD/SM342

The shop I work for part time does them in chocolate. She had special molds made for her.
