So, my boyfriend's 21st birthday is coming up in less than a month and I'm making his cake. Last year, I made one in the shape of his favorite bird, the kingfisher: http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-photos_display_46_-24924.html .
This year, I was thinking of a shaped cake that looks like a pair of binoculars. Does anyone have ideas as to how to do this, or any other ideas for his cake? I've never worked with fondant before, but I'd be willing to try it. I'm entirely self-taught, so please explain your suggestions in great detail if possible. I can't find any photos of birdwatcher cakes anywhere. Oh, and the cake will need to serve at least 10-12 people.
Thanks for any help you can give! I greatly appreciate it.
My would make square or round cake. make a little lake or a forest with some birds on it and a little man sneeking out from the bush with binoculars.
My only thought would be to make a book cake that is closed, not open and do a frozen buttercream transfer of a real bird watching book. Or you could do an open faced book cake with a scene on it like the person before me suggested. I think that would be really cute.
maybe you could bake cake in soup cans.......I did this for a castle cake before.........then you could connect them end to end ( once baked) maybe that will work for binoculars.........you'd have to cut up a cupcake or something for the rest of the binoculars or something.......can't tell ......maybe a small loaf pan would work for the part in between the two eye pieces on them????
Thanks for the replies, everyone! You've given me lots of ideas to work with!
I'm thinking that maybe two roll cakes (chocolate cake with raspberry filling) would make the binoculars, with a small bit of cake connecting them. I might also do the FBCT to replicate my BF's favorite bird book.
I'm at college right now - I can't wait for spring break so I can make this !
