Right before Christmas I decided that I was going to buy me a KitchenAid Stand Mixer because it was on sale with an additional attachment of my choice (I got the ice cream attachment) and some other things. icon_biggrin.gif I was using my mixer the other day and noticed that it was RUSTING! icon_mad.gif I was fuming mad! icon_mad.gif I paid my hard earned money that I had saved forever (I am a college student) plus the money that I was getting from Christmas to buy something that I thought was a Good Product and it was rusting on me already! I have not even had it 6 months in fact I had only had it just a little over 2 months! But it gets better! I was making a cake today and the stainless steal coating on it is coming off of the whisk attachment! icon_cry.gif I you touch it, it turns your had black! You just can believe how mad that I am! I tried to call KitchenAid but they were closed. thumbsdown.gif I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Thanks for letting me vent!

Kitchen Aid will definitely do right by you. I got me a new one just before Christmas and it was making a funny noise. We called them and within 2 or 3 days I had a new one delivered to me. They even arranged for UPS to come and pick up the defective one within a week. I have had a kitchen aid for more than 20 years and love it. I still use my smaller one for some things, but I wanted a larger one. thumbs_up.gif

I will say that I had a speed issue with my kitchen aid and they were GREAT!!!!!!
I called and in two days maybe three I had a new one at the door (they just sent it ups I think) and all I had to do was put the old one in the box and they came and picked it up. Warrenty started the day the new one arrived at my house. I love there customer service and they stood by the warrenty( spelling?) Any way great company just dont stress it WILL be taken care of . And from what I experienced, VERY QUICK!

I have had mine for about 12 years, and no problems. Well, one. I used it on bread dough when I first got it, and the one piece inside broke. It was one plastic gear that was inside... my husband was able to fix. The company sent us the piece. The were good with customer service. Sounds like they may have a recall for defective paint or something....

I feel your pain icon_cry.gif ...and ANGER icon_mad.gif I had a smaller KA and never had a problem with it however my DH and kids got me a PRO KA for Xmas and I hate everything about it (I sold my original one to a friend for dirt cheap too icon_redface.gif ) While mine's hasn't rusted the paddles did change color and also release that black stuff yuck....I did call KA customer service and the CSR told me that the reason the paddle changed colors was because I did not dry it thoroughly. I made a big stink about it and they sent me a brand new paddle this time white coated!!!! No complaints about it since (at least not that part) icon_razz.gif

Kitchen Aid has the best customer service!!! The knob on mine fell off and I expected them to just send me a knob to put on myself, but they sent me a brand new KA!!! It arrived within a few days, and all I had to do was put my broken one in the same box and leave it outside my door for UPS to pick up. UPS even called the night before to tell me they would be there to pick it up the next day! I didn't even need my receipt. They were able to look everything up from the serial number. We didn't even purchase it from KA. We purchased it from some random cheaper website, but that didn't even matter. They were amazing to deal with. You shoud have no problem at all. I even have a new 1 year waranty from the time I got the new one!!!

I've never had a problem with either of mine. I have had one for 10 years, and the bigger one for about 5 years. The white stuff is just now starting to come off the paddle.

I just sold a KA Classic and had to order a new paddle before I sold it. The former owner had never properly adjusted the paddle/bowl height and the paddle was rubbing on the bottom and had caused the paddle coating to wear off. I readjusted the paddle height and it was fine. I don't think this coating should wear off for years and years, if the height is properly adjusted. On the other hand new paddles can be had for about $15. Thanks to someone here I was able to fix the sliding pin hinge for the head too.

Kitchen Aid has an excellent customer service as many others have stated. They will stand by thier product and do what is necessary to make you happy. A lot of times they will send you replacement product without having to return items to the store. In certain circumstances they will continue to assist you even when the warranty has expired. I know that doesn't help you now, but dont' lose faith-they will take care of you. They have an 800 number and also a forum where customer service posts all day and night. If you need a link or the number-let me know.

I'm not associated with KA in any way, but I am loyal to them, as you don't see such outstanding customer service these days. I have to credit KA for getting me started baking cakes, which led to decorating them. My husband and I each have and additional 10 pounds under our belts to show it!

Oh Im glad there is someone else out there it's happening to....

I got my 5 quart KA about 6 months ago... after about 2-3 times using the paddle attachment, the metal coating started going fubnky... not rusting, but it's like its coming off.... it still is fine to use, but I couldn't figure out why it's doing this.

I don't have the recipet or warranty or anything... so I figured I'll just have to buy myself a new paddle... but after spending almost $300 Im very dissapointed that the attachment didnt even last 2 months.

How do you adjust the paddle height? I have an old one and the paddle is a little too high for the bowl ~ I remembered a comment on here about a screw but darned if I can find it.

Kayakado ~ can you enlighten me? icon_smile.gif

Thanks!

"KitchenAid recommends that the beater to bowl clearance should be 1/16 for optimum mixing results. It is possible that the beater to bowl clearance for your Stand Mixer may need to be adjusted.

To determine if the clearance is at the correct level, place a dime in the bottom of the mixer bowl, insert the FLAT beater, and turn the mixer to Stir speed. The beater should just graze the dime and move it approximately 3/4 each time it goes around the bowl. If the beater does not touch the dime, the clearance is too high. If the beater has great difficulty pushing the dime around the bottom of the bowl, the clearance is too low.

The clearance may be adjusted with the screw that is located under the head of the mixer. To lower the beater, turn the screw SLIGHTLY (1/4 turn) clockwise or right. To raise the beater, turn the screw SLIGHTLY (1/4 turn) counter clockwise or left.

Adjustment should be made only with the FLAT beater in place. If the clearance is correct for the flat beater, it will be correct for the dough hook and wire whip, as well. You may wish to refer to your Recipe & Instruction Book for specific instructions. This adjustment should correct the problem you are experiencing.

For anyone having problems with their paddles, there is an entire thread on the KA forum regarding this. It's also worth calling KA; with or without your receipt. They really do strive to make customers happy.

I don't represent KA in any way shape or form, I just couldn't live without mine. And, you are absolutely right, there is no way you should spend $300 and then have to fork out more money, it's just plain wrong. For what it's worth, my Accolade came with a coated paddle, and a burnished whip. The whip started getting funky colored-kind of oxidizing, and KA repalced it even though I was the one that caused it.

Good Luck, I hope this helps you

This is the reply I got:

Dear Ms. Shumway,

Thank you for visiting the KitchenAid website.

The Burnished Aluminum Beaters are not dishwasher safe, as per the use and care manual. Placing them in the dishwasher causes them to oxidize. You may wish to try using a citrus cleaner to try and remove the oxidization.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our KitchenAid Customer Satisfaction Center at 800-541-6390. Our hours are 8am to 8pm Monday-Friday and 10am to 5pm(ET) on Saturday.

Thank you,
------------------------------------------

All fine and dandy, but the issues with the paddle started on a few times after using the paddle, and it had never been in the dishwasher..... I have put it in the dishwasher once or twice in the last 6 months, but for the first 4-5 times I used it, I just handwashed it-- the oxidizing issues started well before it ever went in the dishwasher.

I'm really sorry KA's response was so crappy and doesn't help you in the least. I'll go to go back to their forum to see what info I can dig up and let you know. Would you mind me asking what model mixer you bought? A lot of times the post subjects are by model and I wanted to see what everyone elses experiences have been and how/if KA resolved the issues.

I e-mail back that I had issues with the paddle and the yucky build up before ever putting it in the dishwasher. They asked for the model serial #'s etc and are going to send me a replacement.

He also stated to make sure to dry as soon as it has been hand washed... which I do... anyway hopefully this paddle won't get all yucky.

I'm so glad KA took care of you and lived up to thier reputation. I'm also glad I went back to look for a response on the model-I was just finishing page 24 on the KA attachment forum and now I don't have to read anymore!

If you're interested, here are a few tips I learned from all that reading: Bar Keeper Friend is a good product to wash the blades. Stick to cheaper basic dishwashing soap for cleaning the burnished blades. Soaps with additives-oxy, anti bacterials, fragrence, degreaser etc. have been found to cause problems. Continous rinsing and immediate drying will/should prevent blades from oxidizing-turning blackish. Soaking the blade for long periods of time will cause the same problem. Silly me-I put my burnished whip in the dishwasher and soaked it overnight thinking that would help remove the discoloration.

Don't put the paddle, wisk, or dough hook in the dishwasher. They are supposed to be handwashed. KA is really good about exchanges. I was able to send one back that was 9 years old without a receipt. icon_biggrin.gif
