Hi everyone,

What do you think about a contest where cakes must be decorated with buttercream? (In other words, no Fondant, or gumpaste)
The reason I mention that, is because a Fondant covered cake always seems to take winning position. Buttercream can be used in a lot of different ways, and it would be neat to see what people come up with, how good the smoothness is, etc.....

The topic could be anything, but I just think we need a contest using just good old fashion buttercream.

Whatta think?

I like the look of fondant...and I think I find it easier to be creative with fondant....

So, I definitely think a contest with buttercream only is great!! I think it's alot more challenging to be creative with buttercream...(but that's my opinion). I'd love to see what people come up with and I BET I would learn a thing or two, or three, probably more!

It is definitely more challenging to do an all BC cake. Hey, maybe we should suggest this to Food Network Challenge. See how good the pros would do without fondant.

here! here! I think that is a great idea. I love how perfect fondant looks, but I love how buttercream tastes, and I am wowed by buttercream cakes that look good!!! Definitely would be a good contest.

BC is a great idea. I would enter....

But, just be sure to make it clear if rolled butter cream is permitted or not. rolled butter cream can be used just like fondant to mold things, people, flowers, etc....

I love ALL the contest ideas...I love working with fondant..but just finished a class with a wonderful lady local to me on. . ..with BC...stringwork etc..and havent done any at all and would love a chance to use my new knowledge. At any rate I have loved every contest we have had so far..and am sure something cool will be chosen.

That made me laugh... because here in Australia fondant is the good old fashioned thing to do on cake and buttercream for us is the modern alternative....

I seem to remember that the last holiday contest winner was all buttercream. You can be just as creative with any medium, it seems.

Dear adven68,

Wow! That sure is a beautiful buttercream santa that you pointed out!

However, it looks like they used rolled buttercream here. If they didn't, then Kudos to that! What a beautiful job!

See that's what I mean, I would love to see what people come up with using just buttercream, (No rolled buttercream!). If this santa picture represent buttercream only, it's just amazing how beautiful and creative it came out. Buttercream, (at least to me), is a harder medium to work with, and to make it look like fondant, (without rolling it), takes a lot of talent!

That's not to say that making a rolled buttercream or fondant cake dosen't take a lot of talent either, because it does! I know I can't make a fondant cake as good as most, it's just that fondant/rolled buttercream has a different "look" most of the time, and many people do not like the texture or the taste of the fondant to eat it. (I think the texture is what turns me off of it.)

Anyway, that's why I thought an all buttercream cake contest would be a neat idea. TooMuchCake is a good example of what awesome things could be done with buttercream, and I'm sure we would all enjoy seeing how creative we can be! icon_biggrin.gif

I guess I can understand your point of view. I am a little biased because I adore working with fondant....
I guess you want the cakes to look more like cakes rather than sculptures for your contest idea...

whatever is decided will be fine with me.....I'll try anything!
