The cake is for a dog's birthday? Am I reading that correctly?

Yes--I was just as stunned as you were. She first just order a cake and then told me later what it was for. She's a really good customer and that is the only reason I am doing it!! Can they even eat real cake???

not sure if you know this ... but chocolate is very toxic for dogs .... does she want the cake to celebrate with the family or does she want to feed it to the dog

Maybe you could make a normal cake for the 'people' and a small cake that is made of those 'frosty paws' frozen treats for dogs. Maybe the dog could have a personal ice cream cake! LOL

Maybe you could try making a replica Basset Hound cake wearing a collar. Mold the dogs face out of Alpo and let the collar be a separator between teh alpo and the real cake (which could be the rest of the body of the dog). I know this sounds kinda silly and gross but they did ask for a cake for the dog. icon_smile.gif

Here is a birthday cake recipe as well as some links to some other recipes that could be turned into a birthday cake. The birthday cake recipe is from http://downstay.com/recipes.htm

Birthday Cake

13oz can premium dog food
1 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 pound beef liver
2 eggs, separated
12oz low or non fat cream cheese softened

Preheat oven to 350F and butter 9 inch round cake pan. Simmer the beef in a little water until cooked. Cool and grind in a blender to a smooth, soft paste. Mix thoroughly with canned dog food. Beat the egg whites to soft peaks and fold into the liver mixture. Blend in flour and baking powder being careful not to over mix. You want to retain the lightness of the egg whites. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool and frost with the soft cream cheese. Decorate with shredded carrots, and chopped nuts or dig biscuits. Serve and enjoy!

Sorry.... I didn't read that she only wants to feed a piece to the dog and have everyone else enjoy the rest. The link for http://home.gwi.net/~seadog/kupcakes.html has 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/3 cup honey, 1/4 cup sour cream for the frosting which, I don't know, but doesn't sound too bad for people to eat either. The last link suggests melting carob chips for frosting and I'm not too sure how good that would be for people. Some others I've known to suggest a yogurt frosting.......

Or, I would say that you could just make a small cake for the people and another smaller dog cake (similar to a smash cake for a 1st birhtday) for the dog.

I think the idea of a 'smash' cake is perfect! That's what you would do for any other 1 year old, right?? LOL!! I can't wait to see what you do! I'm definitely going to have to check out the links that you posted doc_farms!

Hello everyone!! I called her back and told her about the cake problem and she told me just to make some of my homemade dog bones and make a bigger one for him and just write his name on it. I was scared to do the cake because I didn't want to make anything to hurt her dog. I will attach a picture to the gallery--its nothing special just a bone shaped dog bone!! Thanks for everyones help though. I printed off the recipes for future references. Thanks again!!

Maybe you could put an edible image on top of one of these cakes of the dog when he was a puppy or now. It should work on cream cheese.

Ok here is the cake I made for my Dog birthday party and they LOVED IT..
3 cups flour
1 T. baking powder
1/2 cup margarine, softened
6 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup corn oil
2 jars strained chicken baby food
2 cups finely shredded carrots
plain or vanilla yogurt
2 or 3 strips of bacon, fried crisp, then crumbled, or use bacon-flavored jerky strips, cut into bits.
Preparation -
Generously grease and flour two 8" round cake pans; set aside. Combine flour and baking powder; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat softened margarine until smooth. Add eggs and corn oil; mix well. Add strained chicken, and shredded carrots and mix until smooth. Add flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Pour batter into the 2 prepared 8" cake pans. Bake at 325° for 60 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from pans. Cool completely on wire racks. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread yogurt over top. Place second layer on top, then spread yogurt on top and sides of entire cake. Sprinkle crumbled bacon or bits of jerky strips over top. Use "Pupperoni" sticks instead of candles

Chrissy this cake is approved by my local vet so I promise it is 100% safe for dogs. I am very careful of what I feed my girl and this was perfect and was VERY EASY to make.. Just wanted to add this

I had forgotten about this, but about a year ago I made a cake for a dog. I used the "meaty" dog food that comes in pouches, and squished it up with some whole wheat flour and an egg, and then put it in a parchment-lined 6" cake pan and baked it a bit to cook the egg. Then I "iced" the cake in different flavors of baby foods mixed with whole wheat flour to make them piping consistency. I forgot what flavors of baby foods I used, since I chose them mainly for their colors. I think it was lamb, chicken, and carrots.

Stunk up my kitchen for a while, but the cake made it onto the dog's website. Heeehee!

My own dog was soooooo wishing we would make her one. Uh, NO!

The things people do for pets....

Wow, Helendelk and toomuchcake! Those are some really nice looking dog cakes! I love the idea of mixing the baby food w/flour to pipe designs, very clever! I have a friend that would do something like this for her dog. I'll have to show these to her! icon_smile.gif

Not sure if someone has referred you to this site:

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art12764.asp

I have a great idea! Why not use the house pan and make a dog house! This recipe made a 2 - 8" layer cake. Maybe use half of it for the dog house and the other for a layer for it to sit on with grass, fire hydrant candle, etc.

How fun. Please remember to post your picture!
