I just saw the cake you are talking about. Wow, it's a beautiful cake. I am not sure how it is attached but I will bump you up hoping the person that made it will see this post.

Do you know the name of the person that made it?? I saw several basket cakes on here with real strawberries in them, but I don't see any that appear to have "lids" on them.......the only ones I saw were cakes done in the basket weave with strawberries placed on top of the cake so they looked like they were coming up out of the basket......maybe if you knew the name of the maker of the cake you saw you could pm them and ask for directions......or if we knew the exact cake you were talking about we could try to figure out how it was done for you.

I think that cake was entered into the Vday contest, which explains the anonimity... icon_wink.gif

Yes the cake was entered into the contest so there is no name. I was thinkink royal icing but not sore if that would be strong enough. I am definitly open to any other ideas.

There was someone who did a basket cake on here(can't remember who) that used a cookie for the lid & then iced it in buttercream.

I have also heard of people using a cake board covered with icing. That way it is light weight and sturdy.

But, I have never tried it myself.

I've done one with a lid, it's in my photos. I used candy melts and poured it onto wax paper in the shape of the basket, nice and thick. Let it cool and ice with buttercream as you would normally. I then propped the lid up with candy sticks and filled in around them with the strawberries. Taa daa!

I always make my cakes the day before delivery and there were no problems with this one. Actually, I think I used real chocolate and not candy melts. Just be sure the lid is nice and thick as the buttercream on top of it is heavy. Don't forget though you'll have berries helping to hold everything up. This cake is a lot of fun to make and really has a 'Wow!' factor.

Hi everyone. I did the Basket Of Berries cake. I wasn't sure I could answer a question, due to the rules of the contest. So I emailed Cake Central and got a response back from Jackie saying it was okay to respond. icon_biggrin.gif

The lid is a cake round cut in half. I did the basketweave on the "brown" side leaving a tiny edge to handle it by. I did the basketweave on the other half of the cake. I placed the strawberries near the center point, then slid the lid into place, filling with more strawberries. After everything was in place, I piped a border around the edge to cover the cardboard.

I hope this helps! thumbs_up.gif

LOL That's a funny story. I was planning to do fondant, but it was raining buckets outside and the dang thing wouldn't harden (plus I had not allowed enough drying time). I used a handle from an ice cream bucket and piped royal icing on the underneath side and let that dry. Then I piped on the top side and let that dry. I used the edges to handle it. After the cake was assembled, I piped along the edges of the handle to hide the edge of the plastic handle. I kept the plactic handle for future cakes. It worked very well. icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you for the compliments. The cake was much easier than it looks.
